Think i need a re-tune, but just making sure

i just bought some 4.56 gears and will be up from a 245/75/16 tire to a 285/75/16. i'm pretty sure i'll need to send the tuner back for an update, but i just wanted to make sure.

ouch...i just looked at the price $75 (i know it may be a little cheaper when i call) but as far as i thought i would just have to pay for the shipping and mike would update the tuning for free. i understand the usefullness of the email update, just not for me (i shouldn't be going to nitrous or doing anything that would require retuning...cause i've got no money ). so i'll just kind of hang out and wait for mike to respond (or anyone else with insight).

Hi POD6,

Nah, you're not "lazy," you're just busy like a lot of us, most likely.

First - in case you aren't aware of this, we ask that you please do not post any pricing from our web site on these message boards - that's not only against the rules here, but it can also be incorrect information in some cases. For example, we have a bundled price for those who purchase the email update kit at the same time they purchase the 9100 custom Micro Tuner that significantly reduces that cost - but due to our R&D schedule this past couple of weeks, we haven't had time to put up on our web site just yet (or maybe *we're* too lazy!). Thanks in advance for your understanding on this, it's greatly appreciated.

Our optional 9100 Micro Tuner Email Update Kit is the easiest way to have tuning changes made, is a great bargain, and has absolutely nothing to do with anything that you or anyone else does or does not get from us with the purchase of a 9100 Micro Tuner. So don't worry, you haven't "lost" anything because we make this great option available.

Remember, there are *many* of our customers that have very significantly modified trucks - people with superchargers, ported cylinder heads, camshaft changes, MAF changes, injector size changes, different torque converters, and many other types of modifications that *require* custom tuning for the powertrain to even be able to operate properly - and sometimes to run at all. Most of those people cannot tolerate being without their vehicle for the amount of time it takes to have us make detailed custom tuning changes - our email update kit is by far the most convenient way to get custom tuning changes. Most people with significantly modified trucks prefer to have that option instead of having to return their vehicle back to it's stock tuning, send in their unit to have us update it, and then ship it back out to them.

It will also interest you to know that if your truck is a pre-1999 model, the speedometer *CANNOT* be corrected in the PCM's programming. That capability wasn't built into the F-150 (and most of their other FoMoCo vehicles) by Ford until the 1999 model year.

In the 1997 & 1998 trucks, the speedometer is recalibrated by simply installing the appropriate speedometer gear in the tailshaft of the vehicle's transmission - that same way this has traditionally been done in vehicles for decades upon decades, with a traditional speedometer gear. Once the speedometer is corrected, the odometer will also be corrected, and so will the shift points in automatic transmission vehicles.

So what owners of 1997 or 1998 F-150's need to do is to simply install the appropriate speedo gear (or have any speedometer calibration shop do it). The speedometer gear itself costs less than $20 and it takes maybe 10-20 minutes to do - very simple.

You can use the search feature here to retrieve and read any of my many previous posts on how to determine the number of teeth you'll need on the new speedo gear to correct the speedometer for both the tire size and the gear ratio change on the 1997 & 1998 F-150's.

And of course, feel free to give us a call to go over any of this in more detail, as always.

Good luck, & enjoy your holiday weekend POD6!
