Dear jim-nc,
In the 1996 & earlier F150's, your computer will be located behind the driver's kick panel. Many times you have to go to the computer itself to find the code, as they didn't often put the code stickers on the body like they were supposed to back then.
The first place to look for a code sticker will be in the passenger's door frame, in the front part of the door frame, in the area of the door hinges. There is supposed to be a sticker there with no more than 4 digits on it, and that is your computer code. It's usually 3 letters and a number. Once in awhile you'll see this sticker in that same location, but in the driver's door frame instead. (We're not talking about the sticker on the back of the driver's door that says "Calibration" on it, that is not what we need) Many times that sticker is not there, however, so the next place to look is under the hood, on the computer's wiring harness. The wiring harness will be on the firewall, down low on the driver's side. It will have a single 10mm bolt head dead-center, that is how you identify it. Sometimes there will be a sticker on top of the wiring harness with the computer code.
If you don't find it in either of those places, you'll need to go to the computer itself, as they virtually always have code stickers right on the computer. You'll need to pull the driver's kick panel off, and then look thru the cutout in the steering bracket, and see if you can see the sticker on the computer that way. If not, you'll just have to dig a bit further, to get a better look at the computer, and I have a nice set of step-by-step instructions for doing this that I can fax or mail to you.
Please feel free to just give us a call at our number listed below, and I'll be happy to go over all of this with you in detail, including whether the Flip Chip is something that might be more appropriate for your specific needs, etc., so just give us a shout.
