Post Yet Still Another Question For Mike T. The Great Chip Guru

Mike, since installing the chip last week when truck is idling it is about 150 rpms less than without the chip. Is this normal? Or is it still learning and will eventually idle where it used to be,around 600 according to the tach. Thanks.

Dear 94fan,

Idle speed & quality are usually the only things that are ever really noticeable to the driver about the re-learn cycle. Make sure you disconnected the battery for a long enough period to drain all residual voltage from it's IC's, thus forcing the re-learn cycle to commence immediately. Once the re-learn cycle completes, there will be no basic difference in idle speed, unless something has changed somewhere else with your vehicle.

Actually, there is rarely any difference in idle speed even during the re-learn cycle, except on some older vehicles; occasionally they will see a little bit of difference there, which quickly goes away as you accumulate some miles.

You might want to double-check your connections, both front and rear, on the computer, making sure the Superchip is fully seated on the edge connector, and that all of the clear-colored conformal coating is removed from the contacts. Generally, as long as the vehicle starts with the Superchip in place, it's working properly, as it's an all-or-nothing proposition. So I think that first, I would double-check to make sure that the wiring harness "hub", which attaches to the front of the computer, has no bent pins, and that it is fully seated and then fully tightened. That single 10mm bolt head that is in the middle of the wiring harness, if it's not fully tightened, can cause all manner of erratic performance, ranging from a dead miss in one cylinder to not starting, to idle quality problems, transmission shift problems, etc. So disconnect that harness and check inside to make sure all the pins are straight, and then reattach it, and fully tighten that 10mm bolt head, using hand tools, no power tools.

If all that checks out, then it's probably just that you need to accumulate more miles. Please feel free to give me a call if you'd like to discuss this in detail, ok?
