Post Holding Mike Troyer fully accountable

I am patiently driving around on the regular fuel until i can tank up w/premium and continue to see the improvements that i feel since i instlled the Superchips last Thursday. To say the least it was so easy to install. I spent 40 minutes start to finish.
The shifting is quicker & firmer. Less throttle resonse is needed to move this big puppy.
I haven't heard any pinging even when i opened her up. Could be that the ECM is still learning and hasn't gotten to the point where it requires premium fuel. Which i hope means more performance is yet to come.
Just as footnote, driving back from the classic car show at Daytona a week ago, I got 20 MPG @ 2000 rpm's w/cruise. Can't wait til the chip takes over!!!

Welcome to the world of firms shifts and better hp, i had to put mid grade in once and since even got stuck with reg in the tank, if felt softer in the pedal but it didnt ping at all. I have bad luck at gas station's pumps always seem to be broke. Mike said that some 2000 where able to use other fuel whiel others would ping. Good luck go out and put your foot in it you will REALLY like the full throttle upshift into 2nd gear i know i do.

Dear Boss Lariat,

Wow, what a thread title!

Just so you'll know, the 2000 model vehicles tend to have more total effective adjustment range in their knock-sensor systems, so that you'll normally not get any pinging even when running on regular gasoline. What happens is you simply do not get anywhere near the raw engine power gain that you get with premium gas. You still get better performance, thanks to our transmission tuning, the removal of all the transitional spark retards, etc., so the vehicle will accelerate quicker even on regular. However, you will not get the rated power gains until you use a high-quality premium gasoline, just so you know, as the program is written specifically for the use of premium gas.

It's not just the spark advance that is changed for premium fuel, but also the fuel curves themselves, as higher octane fuel burns slower, and the fuel curves must be compensated accordingly. So you could potentially see some driveability issues when not using the required premium gas, so just keep that in mind.

With regards to the 1999 & earlier F-150's, about half of them can run all the way down on regular without exhibiting audible detonation; the other half will ping on anything less than premium. There is that much variance in the effective adjustment range of their knock-sensor systems. Another thing to keep in mind is that there is the re-learn cycle, and that during this the vehicle will continue to adapt to it's new program, and get stronger as you accumulate more miles. What I would suggest is that you run the regular gas down until the fuel light comes on, and then fill up with premium. Disconnect your battery so the computer will begin the re-learn cycle again, as this improves your immediate results.

The 2000's are showing more tolerance, but the Superchip still requires the use of premium gasoline to get the rated power gains and best overall driveability, in any model year Ford.

Enjoy your Superchip!

Good ole' accountable,
