Any one else have a 4.2L thinking of installing a chip
I have a 98 4x2 4.2L with a Gibson Super Truck exhaust, I was thinking of installing a superchip, wondering if anyone else has on a 4.2. Thanks Jason
planetauto, I've had mine chipped for a long time now and I love it. I drove a 99 5.4 auto a couple of weeks ago and my 4.2 is at least twice as quick as that big ole bad v8.

Dear Planetauto,
Welcome to F150online!
The Superchip works equally well on the 4.2 V-6, just like it does for either of the V-8 engines.
You'll find a number of F150online participants who have V-6's, and are using the Superchip here, that like Bill did above, will tell you how they like theirs. Also, reading these message board threads is an excellent way to get a lot of great feedback from the people who are using the Superchip in their F-150's.
Please feel free to give us a shout if you'd like specific detailed info about the Superchip for your vehicle, our contact info is below.
And by all means, hang out with us here whenever you have the time, as F150online is the best place to find information regarding just about every aspect of these vehicles.

Cool. I need to buy a super chip for my 98 SC/XL F-150. I been wanting better performance out of it. so how much does this chip cost you all and how hard is it to install. So overall factor, do u all feel a big difference in torque and aceleration? Also by installing this chip will it eliminate my top speed to go only 100mph??
Also interested in the performance enhancements of installing a superchip in the 1998 4.2L V6. What is the HP and torque boost, other gains, etc?
Hoping to see more replies from folks that have already installed the chip upgrade.
Thanks,
tac

I have the chip in my 98 Supercab. It's a 5 speed with 3.08 axles. I drove a 99 5.4 automatic a few weeks ago and my truck is twice as quick as that truck was.

I'm completely happy with the chip. With an automatic tranny, the shifting is much better, and the power is noticeably better - the engine still wants to rev (even higher than before) but I'm sure there is more power in the mid range as well. I think superchip claims a 21 hp gain.
I gained about 1 mpg, so my chip isn't 'paying for itself' since premium is about $0.20 more per gallon in California.
It takes a couple of drives before your computer adjusts completely to the new chip, so all the power, mileage and auto shifting improvements will not be there right away. You notice the improvements right off the bat, but it keeps getting better.

I got mine in august 99, I can say it's the single most effective purchase I have made for my truck. I have not only seen a power benefit but also a 1 to 2 mpg increase. I would advise anyone looking for a performance increase to check out a SuperChip first then go with the other mods.

Dear Dropped & TAC,
The Superchip for the 4.2 V-6 adds 25 horsepower and 31 lbs./ft. of torque. And yes, it will remove the top speed limiter as well.
With regards to exact costs, etc., please contact us privately for that information, and we'll be happy to answer all your questions, etc.
This is of course an excellent place to get feedback directly from other V-6 owners who are using the product.
The Superchip works equally as well regardless of which engine you have in these vehicles; they all get the same tuning technique, so they all respond basically about the same, with a 10%-12% increase in peak horsepower, and a 13%-18% increase in peak torque, just so you know, whether it's the 4.2 V-6, or either of the V-8's in the F-150. That's about what we'll see on most normally aspirated gasoline engines, as they tend to be tuned about the same from the factory, so they respond about the same to the Superchip tuning.
Please feel free to give us a shout, and we'll be happy to answer any questions you may have.

How hard is the install on the V6? I got under my hood and dashboard trying to find the stuff from the pictures on this site of the install and couldn't find 'em. I did see what I thought were the wires under the hood kinda behind the battery. Oh and where is the cheapest place to order it from?

Install is easy. You need a 10mm socket and a very short extension. There is a bolt w/ a 10mm head in the middle of the wire harness behind the battery. Undo that and pull the harness off. The only other thing holding the computer in is a plastic clip inside the truck, on the passenger's kick panel. It pops off, and you pull the computer out from inside the truck. To thoroughly clean the computer edge, you can pop the cover off the computer (has a small torx head screw). Directions in the supechip box.
