HI Steve,

Sounds like you're very lucky, just like us, to have a lower than normal price delta between regular and premium. Here where we are, we have the same basic price delta you listed, 10-12 cents per gallon more for premium over regular, and in that situation, with the added fuel mileage results that you have posted, the Superchip will actually *save* you real money. Meaning, you'll actually spend less money for gasoline than without the Superchip, due to the improved gas mileage. Most people don't get that good a break, as most people see price deltas of 20 cents a gallon or so. It's at about 15 cents per gallon or more that the Superchip can start to actually cost a few dollars more in gas to use, but even then it's not very much, and it's well worth it.

Most people are far too busy with the basic rush of life these days to stop and do ongoing accurate fuel mileage comparisons, to see just what the *real* impact of the Superchip is financially, but for those that do, they quickly find out that it works very well for them in most cases.

We went back the first of the year and started doing more mileage results calculations compared to stock, and we found that it can take as long as 2000-2500 miles with the Superchip before it reaches it's best gas mileage. I talked with Superchips today about this, to pick their brains a bit, to see why mileage continued to rise long after the relearn cycle should have been completed. They told me just what I suspected, that as relearn completes and Ford's "adaptive strategy" takes over, the fuel mileage will normally continue to go up, especially with newer vehicles.

So for those doing these calculations, be advised that it can take 2000-2500 miles before you see thr best fuel mileage with the Superchip, and then it will plateau and remain there, as long as the fuel itself doesn't change appreciably.

Gas prices going back down? Not here. We have $1.49, $1.59 and $1.69 and some places are at $1.73. That last one must be the greedy guys because the same brands sells for different prices depending on which area of Tucson you are in.

It's funny what happens with gas prices in certain areas. Just like Steve G mentioned, last week our gas prices dropped sevrtal cents per gallon here, too. We're in het western part of Virginia, out in the mountains. I have no doubt we'll see them go right back up again, but we too did happen to get a price reduction in our area last week.

I have always said that gasoline prices are adjusted for the market, meaning in a very poor area like where we are, those proces are considerably lower, every bit as low as they are in "the oil patch" in Texas. Yes you look in more affluent areas, and that same basic fuel supply, with no increase in delivery costs, can be dramatically higher. I've seen this for many years in numerous states. In Northern Virginia, near teh DC area, just a few hundred miles away and much closer to a port, the gas prices are higher by 20 cents a gallon or more. It sure seems like a clear case of charging all the market can bear to me, but what do we know?

Cool

Gas prices suck either way. My dad is getting the new Honda Insight (Hybrid gas/electric) Neat car 70 mpg.

But who the hell wants to drive that?

I'll suck the gas and pay the piper; I've driven all my cars into the ground wanting a V-8. what's 10% more at the pump?

Even if I don't get the extra 5-10% mpg with the chip, I want to like driving.

We can all talk about how it will pay for itself...but that is for my wife to hear, I won't B.S. you guys WHO CARES IF ITS FUN?

I bought this truck because I like the way itlooks. With the mods Ihave made I like the way it drives. Although I do wish Ford would have offered the 5.t in the reg cab in 97. I will put the 92 octane in because the the mods I made, "I want to". I just won't like the price I have to pay.

The last few comments hit the nail on the head: we're already paying quite a bit for these nice new high-tech trucks, so you might as well have them running and looking the way you really want. That way, even if you are paying a bit more at the pump, you've got a much more enjoyable vehicle to drive, that puts a grin on your face when you're behind the wheel. And for those who are willing to take the time and do accurate gas mileage comnparisons with regards to the Superchip, you find out very quickly that the higher gas prices go, the more sense it makes financially.

But the point is, who said aftermarket parts *have* to pay for themselves to be valid?!? The only thing that matters is whether or not you're enjoying your vehicle, regardless of what you actually do to it. Some people are happy with them the way they come from the factory, and for others, that is merely a starting point, with everything in between those two extremes, and it's all valid.

As long as you're driving a vehicle that puts a smile on your face, you've done very well indeed.

We've known for a long time that the gas prices in California, and So. Cal. in particular are absurd; it doesn't cost any more to get that fuel delivered there, it's a matter state gasoline taxes, combined with being able to get away with charging all that the market will bear.

Even with all that, we're *still* paying less than just about anyone else on the face of this planet for gasoline here in America. Those of us who have spent time overseas know that for decades people in other countries are paying $3-$5 per gallon for gasoline. We paid that much in Germany in the early 60's!

It all gets down to perspective; here in America, we are used to cheap gas prices to the point that it seems downright un-American to have to pay what almost everyone elsewhere in the world has always had to pay. Just another benefit of living in America!

Question

I also am a new Superchips owner. My first tank of gas was polluted by a 1/4th tank of regular,(I just couldn't wait to install the 'chip).
And with a few WOT runs past 100mph ,( for research purposes only) and 3 different "kills" this tank still came back as my highest MPG since new. I know 1 tank does not tell a whole lot, but to go from 13.5 to 14.2 With all those conditions was a total shock to me!

Thanks Mike for a great product at a great price.

On the gas price issue, everybody is up in arms about gas prices. So here is my $.02 worth. In 1980 I was pumping gas, yes pumping as in fullserve for $1.07 per gallon. And today we got a huge repreve to $1.38 for reg. So after 20 years we are up $.31, not to many products can boast that kind of price stability!! Go check the price of a new F150 in 1980 if you really want to see price gouging.
Also , it seems 20 cents is about average for the added cost of premium, 20 gallons is about an average fillup. so why is $4 such a HUGE deal to people that are willing to spend 20 to 30 grand on a truck?
I don't intend to offend anyone with this post, just want to give a different point of view.

Dear Redwing,

Actually, your post made perfect sense, it's all a matter of perspective, you're right. Ever since the late 70's, when gas first topped $1 a gallon, prices for gas have been among the most stable of just about any product. Few products can come close to matching this kind of price stability.

I think people have come to expect gas prices staying the same for many years, and they basically have. What's going to be interesting to see is where they are a year from now.

Glad to hear you got better mileage with the Superchip on the first tank, that's great! Actually, that happens more often than not, unless you really use a lot of heavy throttle. As we have determined, it can take a couple thousand miles before mileage reaches it's peak with the Superchip, so it should just keep getting better for awhile. On average, most people see about 1.5 - 2.0 more mpg with the Superchip.

Have fun,
