Gimme my Superchip
Help, Im dieing over here. I just added 4.10s to my 99 f150 and I have to say that the money was very well spent. The difference is night and day,and I would recommend this swap to anyone. I just ordered my Superchip from Mike on Friday and I cant wait for it to arrive. This is the final piece that will tie everything together to make my truck perform the way it should from the factory.
Watch out 5.4 owners this little 4.6 is comming for you.

Hey jarrettruelz88,
Congradulations on your purchase.... you're gonna have fun with the Superchip! Be careful of "Super Foot" (uncontrollable urges to "punch" the gas pedal).... it's great! You may find your right foot a bit sore after a few days.I still have it after a few weeks.
Looks to me like you've made some great mods! We'll (5.4 Liters) be looking for you coming after us.... at least we'll be able to see you in our rear view mirrors now....lol!
Welcome aboard.... this is a great site!

Sorry for sounding dumb, but i have no clue what the gearing numbers mean. Is it something with the ratio of tire turning compared to drive shaft or something? Also, is a higher number good for towing, or is it good for speed? Or both? Also, I have no idea what type of gearing i have, how can i find out? Thanks.

Dissonance,
You don't come off as being dumb. your question is actually very good. The 4.10 gears jarrettruelz88 was refering to represent the number of times the drive shaft must turn to turn the rear wheels one full turn. 4.1 turns to 1. Your truck most likely has 3.55 gears. The 4.10 gears allow your truck to accelerate faster by increasing the torque applied to the rear wheels. Also in most cases it will allow your truck to reach a higher top speed. It should also allow you to tow easier. For your truck check out the Vehicle Certification label on the driver side door pillar. Under the Axle section the codes are as follows: 18 = 3.08, 19 = 3.55, 26 = 3.73, 27 = 3.30, H9 = 3.55 Limited slip and B6 = 3.73 limited slip.

I have another question, I'm not sure how a 4.10 gear ratio would increase top speed. I understand how it would lead to quicker acceleration, but wouldn't it give you a lower top speed due to rpm limitations?

Dear Dissonance,
In *race* cars, and in older vehicles, a higher numerical gear ratio means quicker acceleration, but always a lower top speed as well, because the engine runs out of rpm's in top gear.
Modern vehicles are geared numerically much lower than older vehicles were, and so it's very rare to see a modern vehicle that can pull redline rpm's in top gear. They are set up this way for best gas mileage, primarily.
Going to 4.10 gears allows the engine to turn more rpms in top gear, so in these vehicles (late-model F-150's, and most modern vehicles these days) it gets it closer to the rpm at which peak horsepoower occurs. And as a result, the engine can pull the vehicle to a higher top speed than it could with 3.55 gears, because with the 3.55's the engine is too far away from it's horsepower peak, and so it stops pulling.
Torque is what gives a vehicle pulling power, or acceleration. However, when going for all-out top speed, it's *horsepower* that counts. Howsepower is merely a derived mathmatical figure, based on torque over time. Time, in this case, being represented by rpms. Which is why those little Honda's that turn 8000 rpm can make well over 200 horsepower from only 2 liters of engine displacement.
I hope I've been able to make that just a little bit clearer than mud!

Mike,
Still waiting for dealer info/confirmation on the computer code...gimme a couple of days...
Does the above apply to the Expy too? Do I use the same gears for both the front and rear diffs of my 4wd Expy? Does this affect the chip (shifting and all)?

I realize that this is a little off the subject for this area, but, now that I have done a gear swap, ordered my Superchips on Friday 3/17 (impatiently waiting for its arrival) put on a Gibson 3" cat back and a K&N filter, what do people recommend next?
I also e-mailed Western Motorsports today and recieved info that they had fixed their early production problems with the Velocity Tube. Is this product worth the money?

I used to call my truck "Bagless Red" but with the mods done to my truck I need a new name. How about "5.4 Smoker"?

jarrettruelz88,
how do you like the gibson?..I went with flowmaster on my f-150...I couldent find anyone with a gibson to hear what it sounds like..so Iam thinking of getting a gibson for wifes expy to compare both systems..so tell me what you think...and you will love your superchip!!
p.s.what did it cost to change to 4.10's

Yes, both front and rear diffs have to be the same gear ratio. No, 4.10s have no adverse affect on the chip performance or shift characteristics. See my sig.
