"Isn't if funny?, We produce more than enough oil in the U.S. and it's territories, but OPEC still controls things."

With the premium fuel price on the rise, I ask this.....How many of you pulled your "electronic enhancements" due to the prices of fuel?

Personally, I'll deal with it for a while.

I haven't pulled my chip........yet. Actually I like what it does for for the transmission more than anything. Which brings me to a question for Mike T. If I wanted, could I get my chip reflashed to retain only the transmission alterations? If fuel prices get too much higher I'm going to have to start burning regular again, which means pulling the chip out. If it comes to that what would be more cost effective, reflashing the chip or installing a shift kit?

I plan to keep using mine with 92 octane as long as I can. Maybe I will skip lunch to make up the difference in gas prices.

How many people here really think that a 20 cent or even a 50 cent rise in gas prices is going to change your life style that much. I fill up once a day at 30-35 bucks a tank...I will be getting my superchip in a few weeks and I will be paying about 10 more cents a gallon...even at 2.00 a gallon it's not that big a deal. It sucks but it's not the end of the world.

We're always keeping ours in, go figure!

Actually, the higher gas prices go, just like when it happened last year and the year before, the more financial sense the Superchip usually makes in most situations, because the actual **price delta** between regular and premium does not change much if at all. So as gas prices go higher, the *percentage* of cost difference gets smaller and smaller, and the Superchip has a better chance of coming closer to paying for the cost difference between regular and premium with increased gas mileage. There will always be exceptions, and people whose circumstances just don't permit them to use it, of course, but that is the exception rather than the rule, as we've seen here from the numbers that have been posted over the last year and a half or so.

Now before anyone goes off the deep end here, let me explain. The price delta between regular and premium does not change much if at all as overall gas prices rise, it's still the same 12-25 cent a gallon difference in most places, with much of the country paying no more than 20 cents per gallon more for premium over regular. As prices rise, that difference in terms of a percentage gets smaller and smaller, that is what I mean.

For those of us who do closely, precisely, and accurately monitor our gas mileage, most of us do see some improvement in gas mileage when using the Superchip with premium, as compared to the factory programming using regular, and that reduces the cost difference between regular and premium even further. The reason I stated "closely, precisely, & accurately" is simply because when we talk to people over the phone and ask them specific questions with regards to their gas mileage, we find that many times they really aren't accurately and closely calculating their mileage on an ongoing basis, most people are just too busy, of course! Don't get me wrong, I know there are a lot of us who *do* carefully and accurately keep track, but a lot of people just don't bother, and I don't mean any offense in saying this, it's just a fact that we've observed over time, by asking certain questions. When we do track mileage accurately, we see that in the vast majority of cases, there is in fact *some* improvement in gas mileage using the Superchip. Now, is it going to pay for the *entire* difference between regular and premium? Not for most people! For us here is does, thanks to our rather low price delta between regular and premium, (10-12 cents usually) but it won't for most people. That point is reached at about 14-15 cents per gallon, meaning once the delta reaches that point, the Superchip usually can't make up the entire difference in the F-150. Which is why we did some calculations, and determined that the price delta between regular and premium stays fairly constant. So if you figure somebody driving 15,000 miles a year on average, assuming they see absolutely *no* improvement in gas mileage using the Superchip, their increased gasoline costs are still very small, $150 -$200 per year at most, driving that number of miles with a big price delta in their area. Then when you calculate that most people do see some improvement in fuel mileage, those numbers get even smaller.

Now of course my point of view is biased, since we sell the product! But if you carefully calculate actual mileage results, you find that the cost difference isn't that much unless you drive a lot of miles, which some people here do, and drive them loaded and/or hard, which some do. So this won't fit *everybody*, these are just some average numbers for realistic comparison and perspective.

Everytime when gas prices go up, this discussion is gone over again and again here, probably as it should. And each time we find that when you carefully and accurately do these calculations of actual mileage & fuel costs with the Superchip, we find that it just isn't that big a factor in terms of real dollars for *most* people. Yes, there will always be exceptions for those who drive a lot of miles, so that has to be taken into consideration by those individuals. I think that FDLFDCoD said it very well when he said it's not enough of a difference to change your lifestyle, and he drives quite a bit more miles than most of us, since he fills up everyday.

I don't think there is any question that we're seeing more of the typical gouging that this industry subjects us to, with seemingly little to no protection by the government of it's citizens against those who will gouge us at every opportunity. OPEC isn't exactly my Christmas card list, either.

Those of us who have traveled extensively know that here in America we are lucky to have the lowest gasoline prices in the world, by a large margin. We've grown up on low gas prices, especially in comparison to just about anywhere else in the world, so we hate it when those prices rise, it seems somehow, well, downright un-American.

Just a little perspective, no tomato-throwing necessary.

Our bests to all,

Cool

Man, I love it when Mike gets all technical on us.....

Two points I'd like to make about the relative cost of fuel:
- Europe has been paying in the range of 3-5 dollars per gallon for decades
- Factoring in inflationary increases - gasoline is as cheap today as it was almost 50 years ago

I ain't pullin' no chip outta my truck....

I too just got my chip and there's no way I'm gonna pull it. Of course it doesn't even matter on my truck, I still have to pay the same, chip or no chip. But with chip I do get better fuel milage Some places around here has diesel costing more than premium!!! Words can't describe how mad this hike in fuel prices has made me

Hey Tina:
Lord what an awesome truck you "just" got.
I must have missed several posts, as I thought you still had your '97.
Before the Lightning was announced, I was toying with the idea of getting just about the same vehicle you purchased. Hope you are having fun. I may still go that direction when the lease on Moby is up.

Bill M: yep, the new truck's a beauty. Driving it is easy. Now parking is another story!! I sold the 97 to "Spartan". He joined us in Chat last night so I got to ask how the beast was doing. (yep, I'm still missing that truck) But he seems to be liking it as well as I did. One thing that I especially like about this diesel is it's fuel milage (18-22mpg) You just can't beat that in a truck the size and weight of mine!!!

Tina's situation with her diesel Superchip is different that those of us with gas engines running Superchips. She doesn't have to use any different fuel, and the diesel's pick up substantial mileage gains from the Superchip. Running loaded, it's rare for a diesel Superchip not to pay for itself with increased mileage, as they tend to gain anywhere from 2-6 more mpg when loaded. Running empty, there isn't much of a mileage gain usually, it's when those PSD's are loaded down that they see the mileage improvement from the Superchip. And that is just the opposite of what happens in gasoline motors, as they are most fuel-efficient when they are under the lightest load. Just a little perspective.
