Dear Philip,

Welcome to F150online!

As long as your Ford is computer controlled and fuel injected, Superchips will usually have a chip available. Most of their applications for Fords start about 1988, but earlier ones are also available as long as you have fuel injection & ECU. With regards to specific pricing and ordering info, please contact us privately for that, our contact info is below. The webmaster here doesn't want blatant commercial content, so specific pricing is done privately. The basic brands on the market are Superchips, Hypertech, & sometimes JET, with a few other smaller companies doing some applications. The Superchip is the only one that adds power all the time, the others only add power when you at full-throttle, so most people prefer the Superchip. We market Superchips, so our opinion is going to be biased, obviously. Plenty of people here use chips, and will be happy to tell you what they think, this is an excellent place to get that kind of feedback!

As far as what to expect, the Superchip generally delivers about a 10%-12% increase in peak horsepower, and anywhere from 13%-18% more peak torque. For specific hp. & torque numbers, we'll need to know which engine you have. In other words, it's not enough power to turn a heavy truck into a tire-shredder, but it's enough to feel and enjoy, certainly, if one is available for your 1986 vehicle.

Other things to consider with any performance chip are that they basically get their power gain by tuning the engine specifically for premium gas, taking advantage of it's increased anti-knock properties. So you'll need to use premium gas.

Just in case you might be interested, there are a couple other areas that these vehicles respond well to: reducing restriction on the intake side, using an airbox elimination kit like either the Airaid or the K&N kits, and reducing restriction in the exhaust, using a good cat-back exhaust system. They carry some of those items in their online store here, called the Digital Marketplace.

Your older truck uses a speed-density system instead of the mass air systems used in the later model vehicles, so you do have to be a bit more careful in what mods you do, but usually things like chips, low-restriction intake & exhaust components are a pretty safe bet on almost any vehicle. YOu can do them in any order you like, and we usually recommend doing one thing at a time, so you get a good impression of just what each modification did for your vehicle.

Good luck with your truck,
