Question Warranty

Will installing a superchip void my warranty? My truck only has 15,000 with an extended warranty to 70,000.It's kind of hard to justify if my is no good if I have a problem. Tony 1998 4.6 STX

Tony, This has covered a couple of times. Short answer is no. Long answer is Ford has to prove that chip caused the failure. They can not by law say "We are voiding your warranty because you installed a chip."
I'd go for it.

Tony Goodman,
If you have to take your truck in, it is simple enough to pull the chip and reinstall it when you get home. Takes all of 15 seconds! And they'll never know.

Thumbs up

I actually asked my Ford service dealer about this. First I had to get to the head service guy to ask, don't even bother with the reg service people, head to the top. He told me that no, it would not void my warrenty but if it fryed or somehow messed up my computer that I would have to pay for that. He actually had more questions for me about the performance of the chip on my truck than I had questions for him!!!
Tony: talk with your "head" service guy about the chip and any other mods you might do. See how he reacts: possitive then no problem go for it. Negative: agree with everything the man says, assure him you would never get the thing and then go ahead and get it. In this case you will have to remove it for service work. You say you have a 4.6, me too and the superchip really woke that beast up. I personally wouldn't want to go back to driving my truck without it.

Dear Tony,

As others have already responded, no, the Superchip will not affect your new vehicle or any extended warranty. I thought I would just add to this a bit, by letting you know a bit about the specific laws that govern the use of aftermarket parts.

You are protected by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. It has many provisions, but the relevant ones are: Prior to the denial of a warranty claim, the automaker must first prove that the aftermarket part in question was the sole cause of a related parts failure. They must further prove that had the aftermarket part not been installed, the related part would not have failed, and that is very strong legal protection. Another very interesting provision of Magnuson-Moss is that no manufacturer can condition their warranty on the use of only original factory brand-name replacement parts, UNLESS the manufacturer provides those parts free of charge.

Ford Motor Company knows the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act better than the people who wrote it, but what you hear from service writers at dealership service departments can be something completely different. The vast majority of service people have no clue as to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which makes it imperative that you know your rights under the law. Service Managers are more likely to be aware of it, like Tina said, but I've still had to tell a number of them about Magnuson-Moss too.

The bottom line is that this law is designed to set into place a set of rules to establish a basic sense of "fair play" with regards to what parts may affect your warranty. So it gets down to what does the part you're thinking of using actually *do* to the vehicle. For example, installing a supercharger will generally void your powertrain warranty, but installing things like chips, K&N air filters, cat-back exhaust systems, etc. do not, because they don't overstress any part of the vehicle beyond it's design limitations.

Feel free to give us a call if you'd like to discuss this in detail, or if you have other questions about the Superchip, our number is below.
