Question High Octane and Super Chip

As I was going threw the owners manual I came up on how much octane to use in my 1999 5.4 truck (page#196).You must use a rating of 87,It also says premium gasoline is not recommended particularly in the United States
like starting.rough idle or hesitation etc.
Do I have to use prem. gas with my super chip
or will I experence those problems above.
JOE S.

Joe,

How about sending this post to all those folks who insist they get oodles of power and MPG more running premium without a chip. Guess that new anti-knock sensor thing is AGAIN hogwash. Like you said Ford denies any advantage to premium. www.angelfire.com/pa3/spaceace/index.html

Dear Joe,

Yes, that is indeed printed in a lot of Ford owner's manuals, and it's been there for years. The factory programming requires 87 octane for best overall performance, because the fuel and spark curves are tailored for the burn rate and anti-knock properties of 87 octane fuel.

That all goes out the window, so to speak, with the Superchip as it tunes the engine to run specifically on premium gasoline, so using premium with your Superchip will not cause you any problems like that described in your owner's manual.

Basically, it's the different burn rate (slower) with higher octane fuels that can cause driveability problems using premium with the factory programming.

Don't worry, you're fine using premium with the Superchip, that's what it is *made* for.

Dear Spaceace,

I love it!

Actually, it's so hard to know just what and who to believe these days, so it's no wonder people get confused. Again, that's why F150online is so valuable!
