Mike, I think they did start those in '67 or '68, but early '70 was the last year for the 428 in the GTO's and mine was one of the last ones. The "later" '70's had the smaller ones. If I wasn't living by my self at the time and always broke, I would have kept it just for the engine. The body had been "rust-repaired" (bondoed) and I didn't like that. The motor used a little oil and had lower compression in one of the cylinders. I think I paid $400. for it. I could have rebuilt it cheap, because I was taking Auto Mechanics at the time, if I had something reliable to drive. Many classmates were making offers of more than I paid for it. Damn, if only I still had some of the cars I had when I was a teenager...
Now I'm making me drool!

So they *started* putting the 428 in at that time, whereas I thought it had stopped at that time, ok, thanks for straightening me out on that. I can't believe you had one! It doesn't surprise me in the least that people were trying to buy it from you even back then, everyone knew what you had!

Every once in awhile, I have what you would call either a really great dream, or a terrible one, but it's where I wake up, and it's the normal point in time, but I suddenly have *all* the cool cars I ever had sitting out in the yard. So I can go to my 73 Opel GT (the poor mans Corvette, a 4-banger), a 64 Impala SS, a 9-second big-block Duster, 70 440 6-pak Cuda, etc. then I wake up, and realize they're all gone, again. I don't know whether to be happy for having got another look at them in my dreams, or to be sad that I awake to reality again without any of them.

I think that's the price we pay for having been lucky enough to own some of our dream vehicles. The funniest thing to me is, I *never* dream about any of the Corvettes I've been lucky enough to have owned! Never! Guess it only applies to the cars we had in our "youth" perhaps?

I'll bet that most of us here wish we had all those great cars we owned at one time or another. I still can't get over you having a 428 Goat, WOW!

I'm not 100% sure on when they started only when they stopped putting the 428's in the GTO's. I don't want to be guilty of passing out wrong info.

Well Mike T. I got my chip yesterday (monday) and this morning I put it in and guess what?? --NO START-- so I took it back out and cleaned the contacts again and put it back in - Still would not start. I have downloaded the pictures and instructions from this site (thanks guys) and will try this tomorrow. The worst part of this is having it and not being able to use it!!!
Watch the comments, I am not old enough to have THAT problem myself.

Dear Boardman,

OK, it sounds like you've got the jumper misconfiguration on the circuit board of your computer that has been discussed here off and on. Your FUG2 code has been affected by this in some vehicles, and on the rest it's not affected. This is why Superchips includes with every Ford Superchip the card that specifically mentions this "no-start" situation, and what to do. It's usually a green card, but sometimes it's white.

This is very easy to take care of, it's a simple matter of closing the jumper. On some of them it's one jumper, and on others it's a pair of jumpers. You can see this at: www.superchips.com/jumper.htm

Superchips will be happy to do this work for you, and overnight the computer back to you, at no charge. Or, you can use the diagrams they provide on their web site and have it done locally, or do it yourself if you know how to solder. So far out of over 25,000 1999 Ford that have been Superchipped, about 80-85 vehicles have been affected by this. You can't predict it by computer code, VIN# of the vehicle, or anything much else, it appears to be completely random.

Just to give you some background on this, Ford uses the same basic computer in all their vehicles save for the Powerstroke TDI diesels and the V-10s. So whether the computer gets used in a little 4-cyl. Escort ora big F-series 4X4 with much more equipment to control, is determined by which jumpers are left open and which are closed on the circuit board of the computer. The jumper looks like 2 drops of solder separated by about 1/8", and what needs to be done is to simply close the appropriate jumper(s). So far, about 40% of those affected have opted to have Superchips do this for them, and the other 60% have done it locally, at a TV, VCR, or radio repair shop, it takes them maybe 5 minutes start to finish. They can even talk to a Superchips technician toll-free to talk them thru it, if they like. Basically, anyone who does work soldering or with circuit boards will be able to know what to do very easily, and quickly.

SUPERCHIP IS INSTALLED! Mike T.- Actually, my board was style b, not a, but I figured it out and soldered the connections. Plugged it in and it is working. Thanks for the phone call and follow up, Thanks Mike...
