I read an article in Car & Driver magazine that basically said that the performance gains of so-called "superchips" comes mostly from the chips ability to modify the transmission shift points and not necessarily adding more power to the engine. Here is a quote from the article:

Certainly, we learned that these chips offer more performance gains on automatic-transmission-equipped cars. All automatics went considerably quicker with the chips. If we owned a manual-transmission car, we wouldn't pop for a chip unless we were hoping to lift a top-speed governor. Car & Driver Magazine October 1999.
So, if you're going to install a device to firm up your shifts then you're probably wasting your money also buying a "superchip". Plus, with the "superchip" you're stuck using 93 octane fuel.

Question

Isn't it funny, the same guys and gals whom are writing these articles usually end up in a "sister" magazine when the promotion arises. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know the human leg is less consistant than a hydraulic, computer controlled, machine. My point? These "journalists" know about as much about thier subject, as you or I do, about brain surgery.

O.K., now, the brain surgeons and rocket scientists will chime in.

Well, I was pretty convinced. If you had actually read the article, you would have seen that they tested the chips in everything from high-end sports cars down to pickup trucks. They ran the vehicles with and without chips. They had hard cold facts (not merely opinions) complete with dyno numbers and graphs. Facts don't lie.

Dear 98F150STX,

Yes, the Superchip will work fine with that unit. there are now a number of people here using both the Superchip and the B&M unit, or one of a few others on the market, and everyone seems to be pretty happy with the results. You might find that you run it one setting lower than you would without the Superchip as some other have, and that's fine too.

I'm using the Superchip with a Transgo shift kit, and I love the results.

Your right Steve, Facts are proof.

To go with your 2.3MPG increase with the Gibson exhaust. (Better work on the math for something that weighs in excess of, what, 5000# with all the gadgets?)

Maybe you need a Tornado Air and that magnet thing for the fuel line. They have lab test and FACTS TOO. That'd put you up to at least 20 MPG

spaceace,

I'll be the first to admit that my MPG increase was most definitely not scientific by any means. My MPG increase, and I clearly stated this fact, was my observation after the burning my first tank of fuel since the Gibson was installed. And yes, my numbers do not lie. 316 miles divided by 21.34 gallons of fuel equals 14.8 MPG. And, as I said in my previous message, I will continue to monitor my MPG in case this was a fluke.

Now, back to the superchip issue. I might suggest that you buy the magazine (it's cheap) and read the article yourself instead of sitting here bashing me (don't shoot the messenger). I'd trust the opinion of a independent third-party any day over the propaganda spread by the manufactuer (take Slick-50 for example).

Steve,

Id have to agree with you on this point. Ive heard people who say the chip works and others who say it doesnt. Does it? I dont know because I dont use one, but I certainly wouldnt buy one based on a dealer telling you it works and that is that. Facts and data should back up any decision.

I wrote a post a few weeks back on the use of premium fuel increasing my hp and and mpg. Some people said it wasnt possible others said it was. In the end its up to the individual user to try the product and if they notice a change and can prove its validity, then use it.
