SuperChip review
Guys,
I won't rehash what Mike Troyer posted here but all must understand the SuperChip is a performance chip, not a HIGH performance chip.
Unfortunately, some of us cannot realize a 10% gain without some "seat of the pants" experience from racing at the drag strip. I could feel some improvement in performance right away but what I felt clearly was an improvement in my "mushy" transmission shifts.
The ONLY way to document improvement is at the 1/4 mile track, or a dynamometer, PERIOD!! There is no guessing, no estimations, no ambiguites. You get the results on paper without any prejudice from the timer's table.
Unfortunately, I did not get any pre-SuperChip times with my truck, I am too lazy to pull it out to go to back to the track again but I can tell you that a "best" 16.29 @ 84.77 mph with a 4690 pound truck (with me in it @ 190 lbs) could not have been done without a SuperChip. This was with only 2500 miles in ideal cool early Spring conditions.
From an experienced guess I would estimate a gain of maybe .3 to .5 tenths of a second with the SuperChip which translates to about 3 to 5 lengths (roughly 1 length for every 1/10th of a second in this mph/speed class). This may be tough to realize for some without an accurate timing method as this gain is subtle but steady until you go through the traps. I wouldn't want to guess the mph gain as it could be negligible.
Please understand that I am referring to my truck's configuration and engine and not that of the Lightning boys.
Many here have documented their pre/post SuperChip results better than I and have allowed for "driver error" with multiple runs .

Fellas,
All im saying here is that I don't get it when I see these post of guys saying that they noticed a huge dramatic difference. Some have said that they now can smoke their tires into second gear and before they could not, or their trucks chirp tires between 1st and 2nd gear shifts. From my experience with the S chip that was all unfounded hype. I do concede there is a slight performance gain at low end and a little better shift points. I was expecting more, but thats my problem. Having said that, Who knows, maybe I got a bad chip or maybe being at 6000ft elavation plays some adverse role in my plight to achieve more power. All in all if I get better fuel economy I will be happy. And I have been very light on the pedal. Still have a little over a half a tank at 165 miles.. looks good so far.

Darren,
I have to agree with you. I too was expecting a very noticable seat-of-the-pants difference after reading a lot of the messages around here. The only thing I feel is firmer shifts....

Ya , and I think the shifts could be a little firmer. What would be the next best Mod to do? Air Raid sys or cat back sys. I really want to feel that seat of my pants diff. And im not going the blower route. Just want it to feel as powerful as a 99 stock 5.4L

cloaker,
I had the same problem with my 97. I removed the bracket and bent the lip at the end straight.

Darren,
In the area of "smoking the tires" relating to my truck I agree with you. I cannot "smoke" the tires nor can I "chirp" them from 1st to 2nd nor do I want to.

JMC,
I considered doing that, but when I looked at the bracket, the computer was already back in and plugged in, with the battery stuff all back, and I only noticed one bolt on the support. Where are the bolts for that bracket? can it be done without removing the computer? I don't think it can..I might have to do that tho..

With regards to you guys asking about the next best mod...
The types of mods you mention, like exhaust and intake, will not give you a huge improvement in seat of the pants. These mods do not give their maximum power increase accross the whole RPM range. I have a Borla exhaust and Stillen intake. Yeah, they sound nice and look cool, and in combination with the Superchip, the truck is a bit faster.

Ok Gentleman,
I have the MPG in, and I just can't believe it!!!
I have driven 227 miles with the Superchip. I started with a full tank of Texeco premium. At the Texeco station tonight it took 20.6 gallons. SH*T!!!!! THATS 11.01 MPG!!!!! And for the last 200 miles I was very easy on the gas! I went from 14 to 15 MPG to this! I also noticed tonight that the shift points at WOT is now 4600 rpm's. It was at 5000rpm's
MIKE whats the story???????? This is totally unexceptable! This Chip is going back to Superchips.

Hey Darren Dude,
Sorry to hear about your disappointment with the Superchip. I know very little about them except I have gone round and round wondering if a Superchip is worth it and if it would help my situation. I do a lot of towing and carry a lot of stuff in my bed and my truck has not missed a beat or let me down in any way whatsover. I also have a 4.6 that feels like my stepdads 5.4 so I have been very reluctant to buy a chip. Maybe you should give yourself 5 tanks of gas and a little more patience to see if the mileage improves any. Then if you are not satisfied return the chip (if all of this works out within 30 days). Maybe driving it hard a couple of times will help the relearn process.
I get 15-18 consistent city mileage on my 4.6 and that is one of my biggest fears about the chip. I feel pretty lucky already and don't want to take any chances on making something worse, especailly when I am satisfied with my performance and mileage.
The Superchip can't be bad according to many posters here. Maybe it just isn't for everyone.

OK, I've posted this issue in another topic and after reading this topic, I am really confused..
My problem is I bought a 2000 F-150 5.4 auto (thought i was getting the E4OD, but they changed the # ??), well antways I have this "free wheeling problem in over drive and it's a total pain in the a$$.
I've addressed this on another topic and have owners with exact same promlem,I believe it starts with the later built 99s and 2000s.
I asked A ford service mgr and would have been better off asking Ronald McDonald, all he said was it's the computer.
I see that alot of you are driving 99s, with the chip, have you noticed a difference in free wheeling with the chip?
Some of the answers I got from the other topic, said you need a super chip. I need some help on this, and this topic clearly is open to wheather super chip it or not.
Anyone out there, having this problem? (even Raoul too), and have used a super chip to solve this free wheeling, please post or better, e-mail my addy below.
2nd request, calling all super chip dist, NEED HELP......
Thanks...Take Care

Well, I just installed a Jet chip in my '95 F-150/4.9L/5spd. I tried to get a chip from Mike, but he called me and said they did not YET have a chip for my specific computer. I could have sent the computer to him and had one made, but I couldn't afford the downtime. He was very helpful, and really a nice guy, but he didn't have what I needed. Anyway, I was told by many that since my truck is a stick, I probably would not see that big a difference. Wrong !!! I noticed a HUGE difference !!! It's peppier, torqueier, and it revs much quicker and higher than ever before. Keep in mind that all the driving I've done so far have been with a vehicle weight of over 6000 pounds. I am very impressed, and can only imagine how it would run if I removed all my tool boxes and my air compressor ! The only other engine mod I currently have is a K&N kit, which also made quite a difference. I have tried different coils, but keep going back to stock. I even tried a Crane HI-6, which I loved in my '64 Falcon/Ranchero, but the stock ignition was better. Anyway, I love my Jet chip, and install was about 15 minutes.
Take care,

cloaker,
The PCM (computer) has to come out for bracket removal. Remember it is cliped to the bracket and passes through the firewall to the connector. I had to modify my chip because it would work loose in the sand Dunes from all the bouncing around. I groung off the plastic till it could sit flush on the connector. Do not do this to yours unless you ere familiar with the problem and have enough $$$ to buy a new one if you muck it up.

All that I can say is that there are probably a few 'defective' chips out there. I would send it back if possible and get a new one.

Tell me,
Out of three mods (chip, exhaust, airbox mod) which one gave you the most noticable difference? And with all three mods what percentage quicker did they give you 10%,20%? What did your gas milage do ?
Waiting to see what Mike has to say about my chip, before I send it back. I can't afford 11mpg and NO noticable increase in power
Thanks for your response
