Question Superchip and Overdrive

I was wondering what the superchip will do to my overdrive. Do I still use it? does it change anything? does it change those shift points as well?

Hey Cloaker:
A very non-technical partial answer.
I leave mine in the OD mode except when I want to play. The main reason for this is that I often have to back off from several different speeds and in all three gears when accellerating hard and it always seems to slip right into "lockup" as I understand the term.

Someone, perhaps many, will thrash me if I am wrong, but I'm not too sure we really have an Overdrive type transmission as I used to understand the term. I believe it is actually simply a torque converter lockup system, which does in fact lower the RPMs by whatever. It seems on my vehicle, that I can get torque converter lockup in all 3 gears and I have posted this before but never really got a complete answer. More than one passenger has remarked on my "5/6" speed transmission when I do a rather slow takeoff up through the gears.
Again, a nontechnical part answer, but to me it just feels like I am hurting something when I let off at 5500 or so in first or second and it seems to jump right into Lockup. Glad to hear other opinions.
Bill

Dear Cloaker,

The Superchip has no affect on "Overdrive", other than to make it a bit more useable. With the Superchip, the engine now has more torque on both part-throttle as well as full-throttle with which to satisfy throttle demand, or your cruise control setting. So you'll notice that it will tend to drop out of Overdrive less, allowing you to get a bit better gas mileage, hopefully!

Now as far as the Superchip affecting whether or not you have your Overdrive switch enabled, that makes no difference. In other words, you operate the vehicle just like you did before, with the exception of using premium gasoline.

Thanks for the information Bill and Mike. The chip is going in this weekend, since I've managed to end the week on only a few gallons of 87 octane! Does anyone know if I can add octane booster if I have a few gallons of low octane gas left?

cloaker: I had the same thing with 87 octane in one of my old vehicals and when I put in the chip I just made sure I put 93 octane in there.. it mixes fix.. I wouldnt worry about putting octane booster in unless you have lots of gas left over.. and if that is the case just drive with the old gas in there and when your close to being empty fill up with 93 and throw the chip in.. it only takes like 30 mins.

Goodluck.. and I hope you enjoy the new toy

Dear Cloaker,

No, I don't advise using any kind of octane booster, nor do I adviuse mixing anything with the few gallons of regular. My advise is to run the truck down on fuel until the fuel light comes on, and *then* fill up with a good quality premium gas, just don't let yourself run *out* of gas!

Good luck!

Thanks Mike and White, I appreciate the advise, I am not YET mechanically gifted, and I am nervously trying to ensure that I am all set for tomorrow's big event!

White Knight, as for the 30 minutes, well, you might want to times that by a mechanical IQ factor in my case, it once took me 8 hours to install an alternator..on a 70's 400 ci motor!
