Question Anyone using Superchip with regular unleaded?

Mike posted some interesting facts concerning mileage gains (possible, but don't bank on them) as well as some other information. One of the items concerned increased knock if you used regular unleaded with the superchip.

Is anyone using regular unleaded with their Superchip? Has anyone tried?

I haven't tried it, but it negates the Superchip to do that. The SuperChip won't help you if you don't run high octane, so why spend the money for the chip?

When I had my 97 w/ 4.6 5 speed I could run 87 for about 2 tanks with no problems. Then I would start to ping and I would switch to a tank of 93. I could run 89 all the time with no ping. There is a difference in performance when using 87 compaired to 89 and to 93 but the differenci is not all that much. I could only notice it when I put my foot down. I was not/will not be easy on my truck. I bent the frame on my 97 twice in the Dunes so I do not ***** foot around. The chip does perform on all grades of gas over stock ( without chip), it just does best on 92+..

I have a friend with a 97 F-250 LD, 5.4, and he is Superchipped and insists on using 87 octane. I keep trying to get him to use just one tank of 93 to feel the difference. I have thought of paying the difference in price myself just to make him see the light. He will spend over $20 on Mich Light every week but not $25 on gas.
I can beat him with my 4.6.

I have a 99 f-150 with the awsome 5.4l and i was wondering if i get the superchip will i need to start using higher octane gases to get the most bang out of the chip? When i bought my truck about 3 weeks ago I was told by the dealer that the 5.4l was made to run at max performance with 87 octane gas. I could put higher octane into the engine, but it would have no added effects in fact it would make the engine warning light go off. I'm happy paying 1.41 a gallon for 87 octane i hope if i chip my truck i wont have to start paying for the higher octane gas.

Dear T Ellenberger,

If your friend with the Superchip insists on using regular, just enjoy how you keep beating him! Some people you can't tell anything, and you're better off not banging your head against the wall trying!

He's lucky he's not getting some detonation using 87. About half these trucks can do that, but of course it negates the effect of the Superchip. Some people think if it doesn't knock, that's ok, but they aren't getting the power gain the should be getting.

I have a Superchip that was programed for 87 octane in my '97 4.6 SC w/3.55 gears. Although I probably don't get all of the extra HP, I still get the improved shift for the tranny and the rev limiter is higher. The chip really allowed the other mods that I have done: opening the air box up; K&N; and modifying the MAF, to improve throttle response. Probably the best benefit is the higher shift points that allow the engine to rev higher before upshifting. Where I live, 91 octane costs $.20 more than 87 octane. So I get the other benifits of the chip and can still "stand on it" with 87 octane.
