Where's the computer????
It's located under the glove compartment on the firewall. Pretty easy to see if you look for a 6"x8" metal box.

On the '97 & up F-150, the computer is mounted on the passenger side, just above the passenger's kick panel. The first inch or so of the computer protrudes thru the firewall, where it connects to its wiring harness. To remove the computer, open the hood, and look right behind the battery at the firewall, and you'll see the computer where it connects to the wiring harness. Loosen (don't remove!) the 10mm bolt that runs from the front of the wiring harness thru to the computer, until you can remove the wiring harness from the front of the computer. Then go into the cabin, and remove the black plastic slide-off clip from the computer, that retains it to it's metal bracket. You can then pull the computer away and out.
Good luck!

Would I be correct in assuming that the battery should be disconnected before doing any of this?

When we installed mine, we found it 100000000000 times easier to just remove the battery and the battery holder and mount in order to get to the wiring harness on the computer. I would imagine I am one of the few that went so far as to remove it all.
It really made it easy to get the computer in and out. Besides, it's just another saftey precaution to avoid damaging your computer.
Be smart, take the extra time (all of 10 minutes) to remove the battery and have clear access to it all.
