So far at Dinwiddie, VA my best time is a 17.42 @ 77 mph. I am headed there next weekend to see if I can better it. It was VERY hot and humid on my first outing.

Nascar Bill:Noticed your from Portsmouth...I'm in Chesapeake...got my Lightning at Cavalier. Is Dinwiddie the closest place to run? (I'm a transplant, forgive my lack of local knowledge.) Didn't there used to be a place out in Suffolk at the airport or something?

Yes your correct, there USED to be drag racing at the suffolk airport. The airport let 'em race on an unused landing strip. That all came to an end sometime ago. The airport received funding(i think) or whatever from some aviation federation or whatnot but they could not recieve funding if part of it was used for drag racing, so the airport banned racing there.

Thanks for posting this site Neal. As I am sure you know Neal from previous messages, I jave done a fair deal of racing at the drags since I got my truck the first week of june. And as posted in the signature below, that still stands as my best time, (weather condition was ripe, nice COOL overcast day), this past weekend wasn't quite as fast but I played the system well (bracket elimination) and made it into the third round, then I flinched at the light and absolutly blew my reaction time (1.3 seconds yeck). Actually had a chance to run up against a lightning, he freaked and messed up on his take off, probably didn't expect my ford to take off so quick. It really looks decieving now that all I have is the Billet badges and nothing else down the whole side, hard to tell what KIND of F-150 it is. After I WON, he was suh a snob and wouldn't talk to me. i know he isn't a member of this site, (no one here acts that way). It was a very hot sunny day this weekend so I will attribute that to the slower times, low 15's and high 80's.
I will be adding a link to my web site this week that will show some great pic.s from the races. Stay tuned.
Mines the "Red" one and our f150 online buddy, CAF150 is the white one.

Cableguy: you beat a Lighting! Wow!! To bad the guy was such a jerk about it. Even though that lighting is the faster truck, it just goes to show that the driver really does make a difference!!

Glad to see so many Virginia boys here! Yes indeed, Suffolk Raceway was my hometown track (being from Virginia Beach), and each year for many years the NHRA Winternationals were held there in October or November. Suffolk had one of the first concrete launch pads in the country, and most national records were set at Suffolk every year for a number of years. It was the sorry Feds that came in and cut off all funding unless they closed the drag strip, the pr*cks. For many years, we didn't have a 1/4 mile track at all, (except in Northern Va.) until Dinwidde's Virginia Motorsports Park opened a few years ago, and it's a great facility.

I will always miss Suffolk Raceway. And for those of you who are a little older, you may remember the old 1/5 mile track down in Creeds. I raced there many a Saturday night, and there wasn't much room to stop. It used to be a 1/4 mile, but they had to shorten it due to the non-existant shutdown area. Even with it at 1/5 mile, there was no margin for error. I lost my brakes there one night, and had to bail out of the car before it hit the trees just past the end of the strip. Creeds used to be wild place, a lot of drinking, betting, the occasional fight, you name it. Even as short as it was, they still ran alcohol funny cars turning 190-200 mph, and I'll never know how they got them stopped, and I watched it happen many times. They hardly ever even popped the drag chutes, they must have had some *amazing* brakes.

Memories.....

Unhappy

Ahh, yes, the feds and their funds... We used to have a nice 1/4 mile track in York, PA as well (US 30 Dragway)also shut down by the federales. They even held the NHRA Summer Nationals there once (a long time ago). BTW, Mike Troyer... My brother lives in Suffolk, his step-son used to due some drag racing down that way (in Chevies, oh well)

Yes indeed, I remember York US 30, ran there too, back in the 70's when I was running "C" Modified. I don't remember anything about it other than the name, it's been too long.

Anyone remember Irwindale Raceway many years ago in Southern California. Used to go there about every Saturday - until Miller Brewing bought the property, tore down one of the best drag strips in SoCal and built a huge brewery their. I don't even drink Miller beer.
