Question Rev limits:

Question for Mike or anyone who knows...

I know that stock my truck had a rev limit to it. I know because when trying to manually shift the engine began to act as if it had no gas at around 5K. I'd like to know if the superchip eliminates that or even raises it. I'd also like to know if anyone knows the advertised or real red-line of the 99 5.4. These are all question relating to my attempt to get the best 0-60 and 1/4 mile ETs on my truck. Up till now I've allowed the trany to shift automatically (at about 4.7K) because I hate that "starved engine" sound...It can't be good for it. Neither is over reving so I want to avoid that as well...Whew!

Wynjammer:

The fuel shut-off point (commonly referred to as the rev limiter)is at about 5400 rpm for both the 4.6 and the 5.4. The standard Superchip raises this to 5700, as the bottom end of the engine is good for maybe 6300 or so.

In a custom supercharged applications such as yours, where the engine has not received any preparation for the substantial increase in power levels, no beefed up bottom end etc., we do not raise the rev limiter unless specifically asked, and I *strongly* recommend that you don't.

You can usually increase power levels by 50% or so, as long as you do not overspeed the engine, without compromising reliability or durability, of course depending on how you drive the vehicle. Anything that gets routinely thrashed will have a shortened lifespan.

Unless you do not care about the lifespan of these components, I suggest you stick with what you have there.

If you want any of that raised, we can, but I wouldn't!

I agree with you fully on all counts. I do, however, like being my own gate keeper. So I may add to my list of possbile changes to the chip that the fuel cutoff be increased to 5,700. I would want to be sure that my auto shift point remain where it is for regular street stomping and towing but I, like many of the other memebers here, like to get an all out performance check from time to time. Don't expect I'll send you the chip with mod requests for several months but I'm sure I will eventually once I know everything I want and am comfortable with what I ask for. Thanks MUCH for all the info! I have already learned a great deal from you and the others on this web site...

By far the best personal WEB site for me!

Thumbs up

Mr. Troyer,
I commend you for your honesty when answering questions. I've noticed where some people in your shoes would try to make a sale, you give your honest opinion on what is best for the person/situation. Well done.

Question

I'm a little confused here. Mike are you saying the rev limiter is normally 5400rpms and the Superchip changed it to 5700rpms? Where I got mess up was w/Wynjammers chip. Are you saying he has a specially programed chip (because of his mods) and his rev limiter is still at 5400rpms???

Angry

Going over redline in an un-prepared blown engine, can cost you that engine. an xtra 300rpm is not going to be that noticeable, raise your boost if you want more power, it's very easy to float a valve or other bad things can happen, in the red, i unfortunately know

Dear Wild Bill,

Thanks for your kind words. All we really have are faith & trust; if you don't have that, you have nothing. I'm just tickled to death that we all have this great web site to be able to come here and learn about what works, and what doesn't; the money that saves us all from having to "pay to learn" is better spent on mods that work!

Dear Tina,

Yes, his is different. His is a custom Superchip, programmed primarily to keep that supercharged engine healthy and reliable, so it doesn't have a raised rev limiter.
