Chip Help
Chip Help
I was looking to buy a chip. A friend already has the diablo chip, so I was interested in that. I will eventually do true dual exhaust, new intake, and underdrive pulleys and fans. I am looking for advise on if this would be a good chip or if there is something that is better for around the same price range.
Hi 03,
Diablo can make good power gains in some of their chips, but for many of the 1997 & up F-150's they have a problem with not being able to remove the top speed limiters - just in the past 2 weeks we've had 3-4 more people complaining about that and coming to us to get a properly optimized powertrain program. They also don't do as good a job with the transmission calibrations as the Superchips tuning does.
Don't get me wrong, that does not affect ALL of the Diablo chips for ALL of these trucks - there are some people that are very happy with their Diablo chips - but it does affect a good number of them, when it shouldn't affect ANY of them. There was just last week another nice gentleman who spent thousands of dollars on a supercharger for his truck who still can't go any faster than 98 mph with his Diablo chip - very sad.
We don't have those problems, as we have complete control over virtually every parameter in the Ford PCM, control to a degree that no other chipmaker has. You don't have to take my word for it, just read the posts here in this section over just the past month or so alone, and you'll find some of those posts.
To get the absolute best powertrain performance program, go with the Superchips tuning, as they've been tuning these vehicles far longer than Diablo or anyone else, and have tuned more for them.
Here at Troyer Performance, we specialize in the performance of the F-150 platform, and we do custom tuning even on bone-stock trucks that yields more power gains and better performance improvements than any other programs - we've been doing it longer, and have done more for them, so we have a lot of R&D into this platform. We also have the very best tools in the industry available to us for that purpose.
It is against the rules here to discuss specific pricing, but if you'd like to give us a call at our number listed below when you get a chance, we can spend some time going over with you the details of your specific vehicle, it's individual computer code and just exactly what really can be done with it and what it will cost.
You'll also want to spend some time over on our web site at www.TroyerPerformance.com reading up on the various types of Superchips products available for it (you'll still want to call us for best pricing on Superchips, as on our web site we have to adhere to the manufacturer's MAP pricing requirements), as you have a number of options available to you, from standard chips & tuners all the way to our in-depth custom tuning in single program chips, 4-program chips, and our custom tuned 3-program Micro Tuners for the absolute highest power gains & most performance improvement.
By the way - just as an aside, I'd suggest considering a different exhaust configuration, as doing a true dual exhaust will cause you a significant loss in torque below 3000 rpm at virtually any throttle position - the very last thing these trucks need. The exhaust design from the factory has radically changed in just the past few years, to the point that it's no longer the hot tip to do a true dual exhaust unless you have a supercharger, and are going to spend the money to "do it right." Avoiding any loss of torque below 3000 rpm requires long tube headers, high-flow cats, a top-shelf x-pipe, and a specific muffler configuration done by someone who has actually done the required R&D to test not only for foot-to-the-floor power gains for the 2%-5% of the time you operate at full-throttle, but also for all the rest of the time, the other 95% of your time behind the wheel. Which means part-throttle torque at any rpm, and at any throttle position - we *can* do a true dual exhaust that will achieve that, but you'll be spending far more than you would probably be willing to "do it right" and avoid the loss of torque below 3000 rpm - and even though we do sell such a configuration, I really don't advise spending that kind of money on the exhaust unless you are willing to spend whatever it takes - there are more cost-effective choices available that will avoid the loss of torque and get at least as good HP gains. Give us a call to go over this in detail, and you'll quickly understand what I'm talking about - it's not like what most of us grew up with anymore, which was, on any V-shaped motor, you put on true dual and the result was always a gain in HP and torque at any throttle position, and at any rpm - not true any more. These aren't 3400 lb. Mustangs, they're 4800-6000+ lb trucks, and they have completely different exhaust needs that even many exhaust system manufacturers are not providing a proper solution for - that's where specialty tuners like us come in.
One last tip - you probably already know this, so please forgive me if this is redundant - but just in case...........never shop for performance tuning based on price, as that's an excellent way to make a mistake. Instead, focus on the actual experience, knowledge and capabilities of the company providing the tuning, as that matters *far* more than price ever could. It's easy to just add some power, but to get the best safe and sustainable power gains and performance improvements that do not harm the powertrain, that's another matter. You don't have to pay a fortune to get a true world-class custom tune from us, don't misunderstand - we're just not the cheapest in the world, that's all - we do what it takes to be the *best*which is why most people here come to us for their tuning needs - and for most of their performance parts in general. We do everything from air filters to superchargers - and everything else in between.
If you take a look at our web site at www.TroyerPerformance.com (click on "Shop" once the home page loads), and take a look in our Performance Packages section - there you can read up on our Stage 1 thru Stage 5 packages to get an idea of just what kinds pf mods & parts we use to get the best results - it's good info you'll probably enjoy reading.
I hope this brief info helps, & please don't hesitate to give us a call when you get a chance to have us spend the time to go over all of this in proper detail with you - then you can make your decisions based on being fully informed, and what you do is of course up to you - you do whatever makes *you* happy.
Thanks for dropping by, & good luck with your truck!
