Question Need Help Understanding

Hello all,
New to the board and plan to be a useful member ! I've got the mod bug bad ...

Here's my question ... I have a 2001 F150 SuperCrew 4x4 with the 5.4L, and love it ... but at times wish I could get a little more ummmphh off the line.

so?

Is there somewhere I could take my truck to have the stock chip reprogrammed to help me out ... or is it better to just spend the money on a new superchip and programmer?

Help a newbie understand the difference ...

thanks ..

I'll be posting a gallery as soon as the weather clears up enough to wash my baby!

Dave

The only place that I know off hand that actually flashes the stock computer is Blue Oval Performance. ( http://www.blueovalperformance.com/ )

I've had two Superchips for my truck so far. A single program originally, and then a chip for nitrous. The chips really make a big difference. My truck pulled many time harder in 2nd gear. The one example I can give is I use to race a friend with a 5.0l in his truck. He use to pull on me through all the gears. I got the chip and in first he'd pull just a tad, like 1/2 a truck, and then I'd hit 2nd gear and just walk on by him.

The way the chips improve the shifting in these trucks alone is worth the money too. The chips really clean up the shifts and make them a lot firmer.

I'd look into getting a chip or getting one of those new programmers for your truck.

Hi Dave,

First - welcome to F-150 Online! We're glad you dropped by, and it's an excellent place to learn more about your vehicle - especially when it comes to modifying it for more performance! No doubt you'll quickly become another one of this site's many contributing members - it's those contributing members that make this a great online community for the Ford truck & SUV owner.

We can take care of all of just about any aspect of improving that trucks performance for you, especially when it comes to performance tuning - we have specialized in improving the performance of these trucks longer than anyone else (that we know of) in America, and have tuned more of them too, so we can definitely help you get it's performance up to just about any level you'd like to have.

While we can easily have you send in your PCM and have us reflash it, and a properly optimized powertrain program is the single best bang for the buck performance enhancement, that's not the best method of getting a performance tune - unless you have no other option. It's not cheaper, as no world-class tuner does that "cheaper" than a chip or tuner. You probably already know this of course, but just in case - price alone really shouldn't be a "major" factor in deciding who does your performance tuning - yes, of course you want a fair price, but experience with this specific platform and actual capability with these trucks is more important than price alone.

In general, no, you can't just take your truck to just any local "performance" shop and have them do a proper performance tune on it - while a number of shops can certainly do that for other vehicles, musclecars like Mustangs, Camaros, etc. - with these vehicles it really needs to be done by someone who really knows F-150 powertrain programs specifically, knows their characteristics, etc. to really be able to do a world-class performance tune. These aren't "exotic" vehicles of course, but F-150's have more different factory PCM software revisions than any other vehicle made we've ever seen (hundreds each model year alone!). Those who do not specialize in these trucks generally can't do the kind of job on their tuning that we do - just like we wouldn't ever claim to be the best BMW tuner, for example - you get my point, I'm sure.

You'll want to drop by our web site at www.TroyerPerformance.com and see just what the various options are. You have several options with us - for your vehicle, if you want to get the absolute best possible performance and power gains, there are 3 different options that will achieve that (and some other options you'll see on our site too, but these are the best).............. There's our single program 4-bank Superchip, then there's the 4-program 4-bank Superchip, and the absolute best way to go (IMHO), which is our custom-tune capable 3-program SCT Micro Tuner - that's the option that allows you to flash the original EEPROM inside your truck's PCM. There's also the "standard" 1715 Micro Tuner which works well of course, and has many nice features and will get nice performance gains - many people here are using it. For the absolute *best* performance tuning, the 4-bank style products allow us to do the in-depth custom tuning that will get the best results.

You should also take a look at some of our performance packages as well while you're on our web site, as we offer Stage 1 all the way thru Stage 5 packages for these vehicles, and you can read all about those over on our web site as well - www.TroyerPerformance.com - click on "Shop" once the home page loads, then you can see all the individual sections, including the section for Superchips Custom Tuning and the Performance Packages sections, etc.

What you'll probably want to do is to give us a call at our number listed below when you get a chance - that way we can spend some time with you going over just exactly what can really be done, what changes will net you what realistic results, the actual costs, etc. With that information, you can then make a decision from a fully informed standpoint, not having to guess or rely on manufacturer's claims, etc.

I hope that brief info helps a bit, don't hesitate to call us for more info (without being "pressured" for an order) & best of luck with your truck!
