4.9liter chips

Hey there,
Are there any chips for a 87 4.9 liter f-150, and if so, are they any good? price? effects of them? you know all the basic information about them. Thanks

Hi Matt,

Yes, we have been tuning the "Big 6" for years - we usually start about the 1987 model year - as long as it has fuel injection and the EEC-IV PCM, we can tune them. The typical result is 14-15 more HP, and 30+ lbs./ft. of torque.

With regard to all the other info, you can read all of that right here, as it's all part of "the basics" that have been asked & answered here already, literally thousands of times. There are tons of posts describing the effects, results, etc., and you can use the search feature here (the icon for it is in the upper right portion of your screen here) to retrieve & read posts on that exact topic - that's exactly why it's here, so that things that get asked frequently and thus have already been answered many times before, do not have to be typed out all over again each time another new person asks the same questions.

I think the best way to describe the effect is simply that it will feel like you've got about 10% more motor under the hood, as that is the basic result, about 10% more horsepower, and about 13%-15% more torque. With our tuning there is more power all the time, at any throttle position, and at any rpm. Now it's not going to feel like you bolted on a supercharged of course, it will simply feel like you've got about 10% more motor - that's the best description I've ever heard to try to describe what it actually "feels" like.

Keep in mind that these are heavy trucks, so you can't judge any performance modification by the seat of the pants like you can in a 3400 lb. Mustang, for example. Few people can actually "feel" a 15 HP gain in the seat of the pants in a 2-3 ton truck. We do timed acceleration testing to measure those results, and you will typically see about 3-5 tenths off the 0-60 & 1/4 mile times in those Big 6's, assuming it's a healthy motor with a fresh ignition system & well maintained. It will of course depend on what kind of shape that engine is actually in, as by now it's 16-17 years old so unless it's got very few miles on it, it may have things like worn timing chain, worn ignition system, worn distributor, etc.

Generally speaking, if it's got say, less than 100K miles one of those Big 6's, then it's generally OK to go ahead and chip it as long as it's not using a significant amount of oil in between oil changes, and has no obvious problems, etc.
