Chip is Back!
Chip is Back!
Mike,
I got the reflashed chip on Friday. Funny how that happened. Neal was over and we were in the basement in my office and the door bell rang. I told Neal; "that's my chip at the door". When the door closed my son yelled down; "Dad, your chip is here". I scare myself some times.
Well I had a ¼ tank of 89 left but I put it in any ways. The response from the motor was all that you said that it would be. Friday night I did manage to surround the truck in white smoke by making a rubber deposit on the road.
Saturday morning I gassed up with 93 and threw in a gallon of toluene to counteract the 89. Rough calculations showed an average octane of 93.02. Well fate intervened. It was starting to snow. Crap! All in all the truck is running 100% better. As soon as the roads clear up I have to learn how to drive it all over again. I will call you on Monday to talk some more. Once again, excellent work Mike, thanks.

Flea,
I had a dyno run done and Mike tuned it for A/F ratios for the mods I have done.
FWIW if you have the $$ get it dynoed and send the results to Mike. Neal, Izzy and I went and had dyno runs done and Mike recalibrated the chips according to the results. Mike has a list of parameters to have checked so he can extract every last ounce out of the chip. Well worth the effort.

I am having almost the exact same problem as you. I obtained the Dyno runs with the A/F ratios. Big Mike said I, too wasn't getting into open loop. So, he will be tweaking the tune for my '98 4.6. I am most curious as to your impressions of your newest tune.
On another note: what rearend gears are you running?
I had carrier bearing going bad and will be slipping in a set of 4.10's to replace my 3.55 LS when we do the bearing work this week. I figure that between the new gears and the new tune (when done) I should be able to spin the tires just a little.
One last question: are you using your stock shifter?
Thanks

ENB,
I still have the 3.55s but I replaced the 8.8 with a 9.75 from a 5.4. I stll have the stock shifter. Waiting for a short throw to become available. Troyer performance has me on a list to notify when one comes out. So far the chip is all that was promised.

Hi JMC,
Glad to hear it - it helps when they can go open loop (D-oh!), some of them will pick up well over 20 HP at the wheels just from that *alone* - chances are you probably gained a bit more than what I told you to expect, as I tend to be conservative - and, I have not had another identical PCM2 truck lately to do that same before & after on, meaning dyno in closed loop and then again in open loop, to see the exact power difference like we have on some other trucks. So you may have picked up an additional 20 HP or more instead of the 10-15 I told you to expect - we'll just have to see.
I also got a message letting me know you had called to discuss the rev limiter, and I'll get you a call back tomorrow, if that's OK - I need to talk with Neal as well.
Hang in there my friend, & talk to you soon!

Mike,
No problem, call me when you can. I noticed that with this chip my gas milage is not as good. I can't seem to keep my foot off the skinny pedal!

Hi JMC,
That *is* one potential issue, depending on how the vehicle is driven - once we knock those open loop delays out, and/or lower the load and/or TP required for open loop, then at heavier throttle (and *only* at heavy throttle) it's going to get worse fuel mileage than stock - no 2 ways about it, and this is exactly why the factory has those delays, in their attempt to improve fuel mileage at heavy throttle while towing. But we're talking about heavy throttle, at which point fuel mileage is n longer a concern, only power matters to most owners.
To me, anyone with a 5000 lb. truck who is towing another 4000-6000 lbs. out back and trying to make it up a hill or mountain couldn't care less about fuel mileage, he just wants to be able to get that load up that grade without slowing down to 40 MPH & holding up everyone else in his lane - I feel so sorry for some of the factory powertrain engineers who get these things dictated to them - they can do far better, they're just not allowed to in many cases - that's gotta be frustrating.
