questions on 1715 operation

there is supposed to be 3 options with the 1715: performance, towing, and 87 octane. how do you differential between them? when i first got mine, i opted for the superchips program. if i had said no to that, would i then have the option of performance or towing? and i guess for the 87 oct option, i just adjust the shift points with the return to stock option?

just one more question...

when adjusting the shift firmness, where does the superchip setting fall? (min, st, max?)

thanks for all your help!!

Hi SS,

When you first plug in the MT it has to initialize, and then you should see a screen that gives you the option to do diagnostics or tune the vehicle - once you select to tune it, then you have the option of which of the 3 programs to use.

The "default" Superchips tuning shift firmness is "ST" - to change it either higher or lower than "ST," you then go into the manual adjustment menu.

The hot tip on many of these F-150's is to raise the 1-2 and the 2-3 upshift points by 2 "notches" - this not only lets it stay in gear a tad longer, but also helps it to get back up into Overdrive (4th gear) after you've crested a long grade where it's had to downshift - even though you haven't adjusted the 3-4 at all. That's from bumping up the 2-3 shift point 2 notches by the way, that effects the time to get back up into Overdrive (4th gear) after cresting a grade - just a neat driveability tip some of our customers are using.

thanks, mike. i was messing around with this thing the other nite, and i did not see an option for other tunes... when did these start coming with 3 programs? mine has a date of 08/03 printed on it. when it initializes it only says install superchips tune. when i select no, it goes into the customize part... i hope i did not get one that doesnt allow the other two programs...

If I not mistaken I believe Super-Chips released the new 1715 (with three tunes inside) in Sept. of 2003, which would make yours one of the older (one tune models). What a bummer!

Still a good product, just outdated in the fast moving hyper-world we live in.

Hi SS,

In short, you don't have the current unit - you have the previous generation single-tune unit.

Your MT was built about 4-6 weeks before Superchips made the 1715 a tri-tune & multi-octane unit - so what you have is the *previous* generation 1715, with one performance tune that requires premium gas and is towing compatible. This is why you are not seeing the option for selecting 1 of the 3 different tunes, because you do not have those 3 different tunes - you have 1. Now it still works very well, but it's not the newer unit.

In the newer 1715, that program that you have is called the "tow-perf" program, meaning the highest performance tune that is still compatible with towing all the way up to the factory rated towing limit. It typically gains about 16-18 HP.

If you ordered that unit anytime from September 15th or later in 2003, then you were not provided with current product and should have been - if that is the case, meaning if you bought it anytime *after* September 14th, 2003 you might want to take that up with whoever you purchased it from.

Some dealers don't bother to stock-balance their older units on hand when new units come out, and instead sell the older products until they got rid of all of them, then they stock the new units.

If you purchased that MT *before* September 15th of 2003, then you got the correct one, as it would have been the then-current unit.

The bottom line is, you do not have the current 3-tune multi-octane 1715 Micro Tuner, my friend.

Hi SS,

You're very welcome, & sorry to be the bearer of "bad" news - sounds like you bought it before September 15th of last year. If you bought it later, then you should have gotten the new unit, but if it was purchased before that date, then what you have is the then-current unit. And it still works just fine, there are many people using them.

If you ever decide that you'd like to have even more power & performance, we can always do a custom tune for you and really unleash the beast.

Best of luck & have fun,

Hi SS,

Ahh, that makes sense - when buying used units, especially from EBay sellers, the main 2 potential issues are 1st, having it arrive VIN-locked as numerous people have had happen to them, and then the smaller problem of it being an older unit - the only way to avoid getting an older unit is to ask the seller what the production date is on the unit - like where yours says 8/03, for example. At least yours didn't arrive VIN-locked, so there's some good news in all that in your case!

The 1715 has actually had a total of 3 generations - the first one had the V8's only, then the second one added the V10 gasoline engines in the SuperDutys. Then last September, the 1715 got an l upgrade to having the multiple different tunes for each vehicle - but it's always been the same Part number, 1715.

Have fun,
