Got the FLU for Christmas!

Hello All,

As those of you who have called us over the past few days may already know, I managed to get a great case of the FLU for Christmas - and wouldn't you just know it, this was going to be the first time in so many years we can't remember that my wife & I were going to have 5 days off in a row - but nooooo, I have to get the FLU for Christmas!

Like so many other people have in so many other states, the FLU is visiting here, too - nobody else here got it so far, just me - but I seem to have caught a good enough case to keep me in bed for over a week now.

I have managed to get a few posts caught up here just today, but it will take a few more days before I am back up to speed & recovered from this darned nasty FLU going around this year.

Thanks to all for your patience during this time, and to everyone else out there who is sick with this year's FLU, I know how you feel - so take care of yourself & just concentrate on getting better!

Mike,

Hope you feel better soon. I have an antivirus shot every year. Here is my cure; 1 part honey, 1part gin, you may subsitute your own poison, 3 parts boiling water. If it dosen't cure you no worries, you won't feel a thing. I find the bigger the parts the better I feel.

Regards

Jean Marc

Mike,
I am with you on the flu. I have had it for 2 weeks and finally had to go to the Dr. Anita said you were down and out. Get well soon!!!!

I am really looking forward to completing my 4.6 to 5.4 swap on my 98. Look to hear from you next week to get the final info. on the chip.

I like JMC's idea and I use Amareto with TheraFlu. Makes it taste soooo much better.

Take care!!!

Steve

Iridium Plugs

Greetings from Sunny San Diego, Cali!!

I have a HUGE question I need an answer to. I have a 1998 F150 4x4 Super Cab XLT. It is equipped w/ 4.6L TRITON, Throttle body spacer, K&N FIPK, Free-Flow Cats, FLOWMASTER exhaust, JET performance Chip. Question is this: I will need the 100K service done and I want Iridium plugs. Am I able to run these?? Ford says dual plats... but I hear GREAT things about the Iridiums. Please Help.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh..... CaptOzzman,

This is a Flu thread. Unless you have a problem with a flu or a cure then you are posting in the wrong thread.

BTW get the irdiums.

Hi there CaptOzzman,

Yes, you *can* use the Iridium plugs - we use them in all of our vehicles here as well.

For your 4.6, you need to use the Denso Iridium IT-16, specifically. You can order them on our web site at www.TroyerPerformance.com - in fact, here's a more direct link for you: http://www.troyerperformance.com/cgi...oCo%20Vehicles

The part you;ll want is the very first one on that page, it's a set of 8 of the Denso Iridium's in the IT-16 heat range.

Just a quick primer - platinum is used in spark plugs for *wear* characteristics, not because it's a good material to use for making a good-performing spark plug. Platinum requires far more voltage to fire it than Iridium does, and the Iridium will last longer than platinum. However, I'd *never* use *any* spark plug for 70K miles, let alone for 100K miles - no plug should ever be used that long, and yes, we know what Ford & all the other automakers say. It's a maintenance cost game - they use platinum because it lasts longer than standard copper-core plugs do, thus they can get a lower cost to operate "score" - and that is crucial to the way some people (especially companies) buy their vehicles.

I don't like using any spark plug longer than 30K miles - at that point, you have lost 6-8 HP to plug wear even with double-platinum plugs - so it's tie to replace them & get a fresh set in there. Now with the Denso Iridium's, sure, they'll fire for 100K miles & plenty more - but just because a plug will *fire* that long doesn't mean it's a good idea to use them for that long -= it's not. We generally recommend replacing copper plugs every 5-10K miles, platinum or iridium plugs every 30K miles to keep your engine in a sharp state of tune, get the best power, fuel mileage, etc.

Also, if you are still using stock coil packs & plug wires, get them off of there too, and just pick up our complete ignition upgrade package for the 1996-1999 4.6 Triton V8, which includes the Denso Iridium plugs as well as nice hot matched coil packs & performance spark plug wires - compared to stock factory parts with just 30K miles, you'll pick up an easy 16+ HP gain, and compared to factory parts with 100K miles, an easy 20+ HP gain just from that ignition upgrade package alone, as well as some nice fuel mileage gains. You can find that ignition upgrade over on our site too, in the Ignition section over at www.TroyerPerformance,.com

Last, PLEASE make sure to replace your O2 sensors - trust me, they're shot, and even when shot they'll still pass the simple response-rate test - but they're shot. You can leave the 2 downstream O2's in place, they're just there to monitor catalytic converter presence & function -0 but you need to replace both of the upstream O2 sensors, & make sure to use BOSCH - that's what Ford uses, just don't buy them from a dealership or you'll pay too much.

Fresh O2's will give you better power, fuel mileage, idle quality and driveability - they are actually a 30K mile maintenance part (ask any O2 sensor manufacturer), but no automaker puts them on the maint. list because it's considered an emissions part, and if it didn't last at least 80K miles, they'd have to pay for their replacement.

Sorry to inundate you with info here, but at 100K miles, that truck needs some additional maint. that isn't listed in your owner's manual, but still needs to be done - just doing the ignition upgrade & a pair of new O2's will make a difference you'll be surprised at. Best of luck with this, and if you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, please give us a call at our number listed below & we'll be happy to answer any questions, offer you a package deal if you like, etc.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks to all of you for your best wishes & suggestions, etc. - I think I'm finally getting the best of this darned flu. Most people in our area are taking 4 weeks to get back to 100%, and at 2.5 weeks, I still feel like hammered ham...............but I'm well enough to start typing a bit again.

If I had just a cold, my old cure is a pint of Jack Daniels and a pitcher of ice water on the nightstand, both to be emptied before sleep - works rather nicely for a cold, but doesn't help with whatever this flu is I caught.

So it's back to the grindstone, & thanks to all for your patience & best wishes!
