87 or 93 octane superchip for 4.2L stand. cab
87 or 93 octane superchip for 4.2L stand. cab
Hello all,
I have been reading quite a bit about these "superchips" and I am sold. My only decision, purchase the 87 or 93 octane program. I have a 98 stand. cab 2wd F-150 with a 4.2L under the hood. I want some more boost but also would like better gas mileage (which the product seems to offer), but I am torn because the price of 93 versus 87 octane is substantial. So, which is more cost effective:
93 octane/Superchip combo
87 octane/Stock module
87 octane/Superchip combo
Or is it atleast close to equivalant in cost and MPG? I hope I am relaying my question well enough for everyone to understand.
Thanks in advance for any responses...Adam
Forgot to mention that I have a 5 speed manual.

Hi Adam,
In terms of what's going to cost you the absolute least amount of money for gas, that would be to have us make a Superchip for you for use on 87 octane gasoline - that will of course also limit the power gain to about 5-8 HP, and I wouldn't expect to see much mpg improvement - there might be some improvement, but it won't be a lot, not on 87 octane.
What we recommend is using our normal performance tuning for premium gasoline, as that gets you the best power gains, best performance and the best fuel mileage. You will spend a little bit more for fuel, most people driving 15K-20K miles per year will spend about $100 more for gas per year. But realistically, that's nothing, a drop in the bucket for the results. And worst-case scenario, if you drive it very hard all the time, is a maximum of $100 more for gas for each 10,000 miles driven. So overall, you're not going to spend a lot more for fuel using premium gas with the Superchip.
You could also use the 2-program Superchip Flip Chip, and that way you can have performance programs for *both* levels of octane - 87 and 93, available at the flip of it's switch. That gets you the best of both worlds, so to speak.
Personally, I feel that just using the standard single program Superchip for premium gas is your best bet since you don't need any custom engine tuning for major modifications, but if you are concerned about being able to use 87 octane, then I'd suggest going with the Flip Chip so you get both.
The increased spark advance used on part-throttle is what gives the Superchip the potential for improving mpg - the actual quality of fuel it's fed & how the vehicle is operated and maintained are what dictates the *actual* results in terms of fuel costs.
I hope that info helps, & don't hesitate to call us if you'd like to go over this in more detail.
