5.4 super chip

I am interested in finding the right superchip for my 2000 4wd screw 5.4.

I am mostly just trying to stop the incessant detonation from the stock PCM.

Spent tons on all the usual fixes and I do believe this is just a normal Ford happening.

I would like to run 89 octane or lower with the chip installed.

Any help to decide if this is a viable fix would be appreciated.

Hi Tom,

Sorry to hear you've been having problems with detonation - that's not acceptable on the factory program. Unless it's just light pinging that is not constant, that should not be happening and is usually a local fuel quality issue - though at this point, we have no way of knowing just exactly why your truck is detonating or if tuning will help it. If it were say, the typical 1998 4.6 with a code of FOU1, that is a known problem code from the factory that causes detonation in about 5% of those trucks - which is a pretty big percentage - so we have a number of different programs to take care of that. If your truck has that same basic kind of problem, then sure, it can be cured with proper tuning.

We'll need to know a lot more about the vehicle before we can say that tuning can properly take care of the detonation - so I'd suggest giving us a call so we can go over all the details of your vehicle - the exact year, model, configuration, mileage, maintenance status of all parts & everything that has been done to it to attempt to cure the detonation - as well as exactly what gasoline is being used, etc.

As you probably know, there are *many* potential causes of detonation, but getting detonation on the factory program isn't normal or acceptable, unless it's just light pinging that is not constant perhaps.

At any rate, give us a call when you get a chance if you'd like to go over this., & we'll see if this is something that we feel a proper tune can take care of for you.

Best of luck & talk to you soon,

Well where to start with this one?

I bought the truck with 38,000 miles on it. By 38500 the light pinging had increased to full detonation.

I have changed plugs, MAF, coolant temp,EGR, EGR regulator, DPFE sensor.

Three fuel filters and complete cooling system overhaul.

At 47000 miles the right head gasket was leaking. I paid Ford 1600 dollars to replace that. They said they could see nothing wrong with any part they had removed to accomplish that.

It detonates on 91 octane which is the max we get here in Kansas. I did run some VP racing fuel in it for a couple of tanks and it ran with a tolerable amount of pinging taking place.

I also have ran countless bottles of SeaFoam through both the fuel system and also let it draw into the combustion chamber. I was told there was no carbon build up by Ford. They also say they can hear it but they don't know what is causing it. PCM always appears code free.

I have left only to try something after market to fix this problem. I guess I should maybe change the sock in the fuel tank.

Thanks for your response. I was more hoping the super chip would be the miricle cure. I also have built enough engines to figure it wouldn't cure something that was in that bad of shape before you plug it in.

After all the money I have spent on this truck I am thinking it may just be smarter and cheaper to see how long before it puts a hole in a piston.

The truck now has 52000 miles on it and getting worse with each mile. I am totally surprised it hasn't done itself in already.
