Engine upgrades. Plug recommendations please.
Engine upgrades. Plug recommendations please.
Hello again.
I have just purchased a new 2003 F-150 SC 4x4 with a 5.4. I already ordered the Troyer Performance Stage1-MT kit which includes the Superchips Micro Tuner, Air Force One Intake System and Magnaflow Cat-Back Exhaust System. In addition I have ordered the dual 16" fan kit.
Do the stock plugs need to be upgraded? What plugs do you all recommend?
The truck has 150 miles on it but I will put 500 on before starting the performance mods installation.
Thank you,
Lonster

Hi Lonster,
This may sound funny coming from a company selling parts for a living, but at this point, your stock plugs are actually fine.
Yes, you can pick up a coupla-few more HP by swapping in a set of Denso Iridium spark plugs in the stock heat range of IT-16, they are the best performance plug on the market and we use *only* the Denso Iridium in *all* our vehicles. But in terms of do you actually *need* to do that right now, the answer is no, you do not.
Can you benefit from using them? Sure, you'll pick up a few HP & have a bit hotter spark all the time, so if you feel it's worth it to you from that standpoint, then fine, go ahead & pick yourself up a set - we carry the Denso's on our web site, of course - otherwise, I'd just leave the stock plugs in there for a normal 30K mile service life and *then* replace them with the Denso's.
Your current modifications don't call for a colder plug than stock, so you can continue to use those stock plugs until you've got 30K miles and that is probably what I'd do in your shoes - heck, you paid $8 apiece for those spark plugs in that engine from the factory!
