how can i tell if i have the new 1715 tuner?

Got my tuner today, read the instructions, and nowhere does it say how to choose the 3 performance programs. So my question is, is this last years model and not the uptodate one? The guy i ordered from said it was the new one, so now i have to call superchips, and probably will have to return it for the new one. anybody can elaborate on this would be great.

Hi stx03,

I don't think your dealer would deliberately deceive you - they should have been able to tell you how to identify it as a new one, but I'll go ahead and post some info for you so you can check it...........

In general, one way to tell if you got the new one (without plugging it in, that is) is to look on the end of the box, at the white sticker where it says 1715........below that there will be a date range - the previous generation of 1715 said '96-'02, the new generation says '96-'03. In other words, the new unit "officially" supports all 2003 models, including those with the hybrid PCM's.

A better way is with regard to the docs - in the new units you'll see in the installation manual that it talks about some of the 2003 models (2003 Expeditions & a few very late 2003 F-150's) having a different PCM (we call it a "hybrid" PCM) - anyway, it tells you to disconnect the middle of the 3 connectors on those models - on all the rest, you remove the fuel pump fuse. If that info about disconnecting the middle of the 3 connectors is in your installation manual, then BINGO! - you have one of the new units.

It sounds like you haven't even plugged the unit in yet - so I'd suggest going ahead and doing the installation, and then you'll see it give you a choice of the 3 different programs on it's LCD screen - and if not, you can cancel the process.

Another informal way to tell if you have the new unit is that it's OBD-II connector on it's cable will be very tight-fitting on the truck's OBD-II port - all previous OBD-II devices, whether they are previous Micro Tuners or diagnostic tools or anything else, has always had a bit of a "sloppy" fit on the OBD-II connector, that's a common trait of OBD-II connections in general - but this new Micro Tuner has a very tight-fitting OBD-II connector on the end of it's cable, so that's another way to tell without actually using the unit - just plug in the cable by itself with the engine off & keys out of the ignition, and if it's a very tight fit on the vehicle's OBD-II connector - it's the new cable, thus probably the new unit.

That isn't a foolproof method, that's just what we've found in using them and the previous units - the best way to tell is to just check the docs to see if it has the section that talks about needing to disconnect the middle of 3 connectors on the PCM - that's only for certain 2003 models - anyway, if that info is in the installation manual, then you've got the new unit.

I'm sure you're probably fine and things are just as your dealer told you - best of luck & enjoy your Micro Tuner!

Check the label on top of the tuner itself, mine has a date of 9/12/03 and it is the new one.

Hi stx,

It has a date of JUNE on it?!? Obviously that's the previous generation unit. I'm sure they'll work with you on this, & good luck with that!
