Mike ?

My uncle just bought one of the new Dodge Magnum trucks and to be quite frank, he is disappointed in the performance. Part of the reason for his disappointment comes from the fact that he went from a diesel to a gas engine and he tows a 25-foot trailer.
He is interested in a chip for towing performance and specifically a flip chip since the rest of the time he would not want to use premium gas.

So my question, is there a chip available for the 2003 Dodge Magnum engine?

If so I will forward him your phone number, as he would prefer to work with a reputable dealer (I told him how much you are trusted on these forums).

Hi WLF,

Well, he just may be in luck! If he has a 2003 with either the 3.9L V6, or the 5.2 (318) or 5.9 (360) V8 engines, then yes, we *do* have a great performance program for his vehicle.

It's our Dodge Micro Tuner, and will add as much as a 40+ HP gain to the newer V8 engines, as Dodge's tuning leaves so very much to be desired. They leave more on the table than any other automaker, in terms of how much power we can add.

He can give us a call, and he can also read all about it on our web site, at www.TroyerPerformance.com - when the home page loads, click on "Shop," then when he sees the Superchips section, have him click on "List by Vehicle Type." That way he can cut right thru to the Dodge applications without having to wade thru all the Ford & GM applications. It's our Part# 3715.

Thanks for your post!

Mike,
I'm sorry, my post didn't include engine, he got the newly advertised HEMI engine. Is that one that you can help with the tuning?

You SOL, on any hemi chips that actually do any good until late this year at least. Mopar is going to come out with one in the fall, but until then the stock computer limits all bolt on mods making them void.
The Mopar hemi chip is expected to bump the hemi's power to 380+ hp and over 400 torque.

I do believe Jet makes a chip for the hemi now, but it is pretty much junk.

Besides the chip, kenne bell is coming out with a supercharger for the hemi, expected to be released this summer, that will bump the hemi, to 500hp at the rear wheels. (This system also doesn't need any internal engine work to it, just bolt on the supercharger, and some computer work and off you go)

Hope the info helps, if your looking for more on the hemi visit:

Lots of hemi info in there.

Hi WLF,

No, we've not released the tuning for the 4.7 V8 or the 5.9 HEMI yet (they're basically the same platform in a number of aspects), that will be a couple of months down the road. That project has the same priority for us, and the same basic controls as the 4.7 motor, both of which we're working on as of this time.

The PCM in the Dodge 5.7 HEMI or the Dodge 4.7 V8 does *NOT* make all other bolt-on modifications "void" as was stated in another post, that's not correct at all.

There are still plenty of "bolt-on" things that can be done for that platform, it's simply a new application and as such, it takes time for the aftermarket to respond to it and get new products R&D'd and released, that's all. There is absolutely nothing going on to prevent the use of a good intake kit, a cat-back exhaust system, underdrive pulleys or even a supercharger (using an FMU & stock injectors), and there have already been a number of custom supercharged applications that we've worked with on that platform. It's simply a matter of what is actually *available*, it's not true that the stock PCM makes all other bolt-on mods pointless or "void," that nonsense.

Now what I *do* agree with is that to date, nobody has actually released/offering proper *custom* tuning to take care of changes that have a significant impact on tuning, such as MAF changes, injector size changes, ported cylinder heads, higher compression ratios, significant changes to camshaft profile, etc. And for *that*, it's going to be a little while for us, simply because there are only so many platforms & vehicle applications that can be R&D'd at one time, not because there is anything going on preventing anyone but the manufacturer from changing tuning in that application. There are simply other vehicle platforms whose priorities are higher up the totem pole of priority, such as the new 6.0 Powerstroke diesel, the GM Duramax diesel, etc., and as we all know, R&D flows first to those applications that can provide the best ROI, as always. In fact, over the next 4 months the products we are releasing will darn near revolutionize aftermarket tuning in general, more I can't say publicly at this time.

The bottom line is that there's nothing going on in the Mopar 4.7 or 5.7 HEMI PCM that prevents it from being modified or tuned, and Dodge's tuning certainly leaves an awful lot to be desired as we're already getting larger raw power gains from those motors than just about any other normally aspirated V8 engine. Not because it's a HEMI, that has nothing to do with that aspect at all, it's simply due to the factory tuning being less than optimal, to put it politely. Heck, in the current 5.2 & 5.9 applications, we're seeing over 40 HP gains! Just as an aside, it's hard to believe that Dodge is *still* using the antiquated TBI (throttle body injection) systems on those motors that most other automakers phased out a decade or so ago.

At any rate, best of luck with your uncle's new HEMI, and I'd suggest having him check back with us towards late Summer for that Superchips application.

Thanks Mike. I will keep this post aside and check back later towards fall. My uncle is in the "senior" generation and so I don't see him doing too many other mods to the truck. He is interested in the "chip or programmer" so that may be the extent of it.
I'll talk to you later on this.
