Hi Peter,
No, you cannot use *ANY* pulley, not even a 2 PSI pulley, to raise boost and still use the Micro Tuner. *Any* pulley to raise boost on the factory supercharged Lightning or Harley must be accompanied by a proper custom PCM program for safe operation and to make the power it can and should.
I think this is Peter P., from our discussion earlier today, and if I'm correct, we've covered this over the phone. But it is a *very* important question and one that comes up time and again, with everybody and their brother offering opinions on this, so I'm answering here as well.
When you install *any* pulley to raise boost in the supercharged 5.4 Lightning or Harley, you will peak the meter in the program very quickly, as Ford only allows 4.78 volts, you don't get the full 5.0 volts of MAF current unless you have a program designed specifically for the vastly increased loads the MAF "sees" with higher-boost pulleys. And there is a world of additional CFM's and a lot more power available with the full 5.00 volts that cannot be obtained with just 4.78 volts as it's limited to in the factory program, and in "standard" Lightning performance programs.
This is easy to correct, it just requires proper tuning so the PCM can continue to respond properly to ever-increasing loads. That is not done in the Micro Tuner's programming, which, where supercharged 5.4 Lightnings & Harleys are concerned, is intended only for stock to lightly modified Lightnings.
Once the meter peaks in the program (and I'm not talking about physically peaking the meter, I'm talking about in the PCM's program), the PCM cannot respond to load properly, and thus you do not have proper control over A/F's, timing, etc. as you should. The engine doesn't shut down like it will when you physically peak the meter, it will continue to run when you peak the meter in the program like that, but it can't compensate the tuning on the fly for the increased load levels seen with raised boost pulleys, thus custom tuning is required.
You can use the Micro Tuner on a 1999-2003 Lightning with other mods such as an intake kit, a cat-back exhaust, an electric fan kit and a larger throttle body, for example.
For mods like changing the MAF (mass airflow meter), raising boost levels, etc., you will have to have proper custom tuning done, and we advise doing that in the 2-program Superchip Flip Chip, which is Part# 1300-LH on our web site over at www.TroyerPerformance.com.
Thanks for calling today Peter, always nice to talk to you again!
