Super Chip questions
Super Chip questions
I have a 01 Supercrew, 5.4, 4x4, ORP, 3.55 LS.
I installed the K&N FPIK, and a Gibson sideswept cat back.
I'm looking for additional power for towing in the mountains.
The FPIK and catback have helped but I need more.
Can someone give me approx HP and TQ numbers for the
SuperCHip ? Is this really going to help and improve HP/TQ
as stated ?
Installation, price, and fuel requirments (91 ?) would be helpful too !
Thanks in advance, TMeyers-Colorado

Hi TMyers,
Actually, if you'll make use of the search feature here (the icon to access it is in the upper right area of your screen here), you can look up the responses of numerous people who are in your exact same situation of needing more power for towing, and used the Superchips tuning to get there. For example, there is a fellow that goes by the name of "Family Ride" who is dong heavy towing with his Expedition, There's another fellow, I think he was towing as well, that goes by the screen name here "Conocoan," and he's made a number of observations as well as many, many other people.
The Superchips tuning should be looked at, in round numbers, as basically about a 10% power gain, as it works all the time, at any throttle position or rpm. It's not going to suddenly make you able to tow 7000 lbs. up a mountain as if the load and the mountain weren't there, of course, but it *is* the single best bang for the buck performance enhancement you can make to these vehicles. Optimizing the powertrain program is generally the single best bang for the buck in just about any computer controlled vehicle.
The maximum potential power gain on the 5.4 is 28 hp & 46 lbs./ft. of torque; how much you'll actually gain depends on your individual vehicle, your location & fuel quality as well as altitude, etc., all the normal factors that affect power either stock or modified, in other words. With 93 octane and at sea level altitude, that will of course give you the largest power gains. Running 91 octane at higher altitude, you won't gain as much HP, thought the *percentage* of power gain, about 10%, will still be there. It's all a matter of how much power your vehicle actually makes right now, and figure you'll pick up about 10% more.
Of course, it will also help the automatic transmission quite a bit too, giving it much better shift characteristics with less slippage and heat buildup.
Your current mods add some power at heavier throttle, the K&N FIPK is worth about 14-15 HP on the 5.4 motor @ 5000 rpm, and the Gibson SweptSide exhaust system is worth another 8 to maybe 10 hp. The Superchips tuning is going to do darn near as much as both your intake & exhaust mods put together, but don't expect it to turn a 10,000 lb. load into one that feels like only 5000 lbs., you know what I mean.
You can read more about the Superchips tuning on our web site, over at www.TroyerPerformance.com - just click on "Shop" once the home page loads, and then you can easily see the Superchips section, at which point you can click on "List by Vehicle Type" to see just the FoMoCo Superchip applications.
There are 3 different Superchips products you can use on that vehicle, the single program Superchip, the dual octane version of our 2-program Superchip Flip Chip, and then what most people use, the Superchips Micro Tuner.
Optimization of the powertrain program will require the use of good quality premium gasoline of at least 91 octane. Those who want to be able to use regular gas (87) sometimes have an excellent option available, our dual octane 2-program Superchip Flip Chip, which has performance programs for both premium gas and 87 octane available at the flip of it's switch. On 87 octane, the power gain is very small of course, maybe 5-7 HP, but you still get all the other benefits too, delays & retards removed, etc., so the powertrain is more responsive and the vehicle runs better than it did on it's factory stock program. And then on the premium gas program, you get the full power gain.
If you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call, our number is listed below for your convenience.
Good luck with your truck,
