Question Mike T/ OBD Emissions testing ??

Mike or anyone else....

I have always taken my truck in for its annual inspection/emissions testing with the chip installed and its always passed with flying colors. I knew the chip wouldnt cause a problem there anyways.
I just received my annual renewal reminder with an added information card about a new testing procedure it has to pass. It states that all vehicles 1996 or newer are required to pass a OBD emissions test to receive the renewal sticker.

Question is this...
Do I now need to remove the chip before taking it in? I know the chip by-passes the internal programming and routes it to the chip to run. Is this going to spit up any error codes when they hook this new OBD tester up to it??
Sorry for my ignorance on the whole techie aspects of the chip but was wondering where I stand with it when I take it in.

Thanks Mike or anyone else who can help, I plan on taking it in Fri for the testing and renewal.

Hi 2000,

As long as your vehicle will pass emissions without the Superchip, it will pass emissions with the Superchip. So generally speaking, you can leave it right in there, as the Superchip is a 50-state CARB & EPA emissions approved part. In fact, you get the CARB EO# on a sticker and on a white card with the green CARB logo on it when you purchase your Superchip new.

The new test is a not a good one in my opinion, as instead of actually sniffing the tailpipe to see just what the vehicle's engine is actually putting out into the atmosphere, all they do is simply plug in a code scanner to the OBD-II port to see if there are any emissions-related codes indicating some part of the emissions system is not operating properly.

There *is* a code that some higher-end diagnostic equipment can pick up with a performance chip installed, which is a P0605 code (we mention this in our supplemental Performance Products documentation that we send out with every Superchip purchased from us for the F-150 platform, too). That is a code indicating that the PCM's internal ROM is not functioning (which sometimes makes some inexperienced dealership service techs think the PCM is bad and must be replaced, when in fact nothing is wrong at all, which is why we mention it in our docs), and that code is actually *supposed* to be there anytime any performance chip is present on the J3 connector of any Ford EEC-IV or EEC-V PCM. The engagement of that J3 circuit causes the PCM to in effect "turn off" it's internal EEPROM and instead, use the alternate external data path to access the instructions contained inside the performance chip. That's what Ford designed that circuit for in the first place, to provide an external override data path to facilitate new vehicle development, & we just take advantage of their design to deliver our tuning instructions.

I have yet to see an emissions inspection ever pull up that P0605 code in any state, in our experience usually about the only scanners that will pick that code up are Ford's older BSDS (Service Bay Diagnostic System), which are found only at Ford dealerships, and not many of them are still in use, as that was replaced several years ago by the newer WDS satellite-based system (at a whopping $300K each dealership had to shell out for the hardware).

If it makes you feel more comfortable, you can always pull the chip for the inspection, but it is a 50-state emissions approved part & has the CARB EO#, all of that info is with the paperwork that came with that Superchip when it was originally purchased. About half the people here pull their chips for emissions, and half don't, and so far, not one person has had any problem that has left it in.

So that's the pertinent information you'll want to know, from there it's up to you to decide whether or not you want to pull it for emissions testing.

Smog Test

Just had my truck smoged with chip installed. No problems. Calif has about the toughest emissions of any state. Since you said you were going to leave it in, How did it go.

Since I had all the problems Thurs night I spent most of Fri getting new tire, having wifes windows tinted and etc. I will probably take it in later this week and have it done. It always passed before with it in so with Mikes explanation I know it wont spit up a code or anything and will leave it in this time also for new kind of testing....
