Question for Mike

I was just wondering how long it normally takes to get a superchip after ordering it. I will be leaving home to go back to work on a fire crew pretty soon and I don't want to not have time to get it. I was also wondering why the flip chip is so much more expensive? seems like it would be easy enough to do without the cost. I think I will just go with a 91+ octane chip because I don't see the cost benefit of being able to use 87 also.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

That all depends on if we're doing custom tuning or not, where you are and how you have us ship it, as they're in stock & ready to go all the time in terms of all the non-custom performance programs. For example, if you do not need custom tuning, then all we need is your computer code & we could have your Superchip in your hands literally tomorrow (since today is Friday, that would require expensive Saturday delivery, if available where you live).

With regard to the pricing of the Flip Chip, believe it or not it's actually the best performance bargain anyone will ever get in powertrain programming. You get your choice of any 2 performance programs, and it's price *also* includes the cost of any custom tuning for modifications needed at time of purchase (with the sole exception of a supercharger, blower tunes cost more), saving hundreds & hundreds of dollars when you're talking about 2 custom programs.

What needs to be remembered in this regard is that it's not the cost of the raw hardware, the modules themselves aren't very expensive at all, of course. It's the cost of what's *inside* that module, the R&D that goes into the actual software contained within that controls your powertrain, and in the case of the Flip Chip, it's *twice* as many programs, and includes custom tuning. Each program has huge costs to R&D and certify for emissions, and that's just in the "standard" performance programs. When we get into the custom stuff, it takes numerous hours of very expensive engineering time to get that done.

Some of this you may not have been aware of, especially if you're just looking at our dual octane version of the Flip Chip in our online ordering system here on F-150 Online (the link to which is below in our signature line), but if you will take a look over on *our* web site at http://www.TroyerPerformance.com - then you can see much more detailed information about the Flip Chip & what it includes, etc.

In your case, it very well may not make financial sense for you to use the Flip Chip, only you can really decide that of course. If you don't need any custom tuning for modifications, and you don't care that much about having a second performance program available at the flip of a switch so you can use 87 octane & get better performance too, then sure, I'd say stick with the single program Superchip.

The bottom line is, you need to do whatever *you* feel is most appropriate for your needs & budget, etc. You'll get the same performance gains with the single program Superchip as you would on Side 2 of the dual octane Flip Chip.

Thanks for your post, & feel free to give us a call if you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, get the exact shipping costs & time of delivery to your address, etc.

Have a great weekend,

Thanks for the reply! I may just save up my pennies and go for the flip chip. I won't have to have it specially programed as I don't really have any mods done to my truck. I might add cat back exhaust one of these days, but the chip should adjust to that right? Thanks for the info, I am sure I will be happy with it when I get one because you seem to really know what you are doing!

Hi Montana98,

You're very welcome, of course!

You're right about not needing any program changes for a cat-back exhaust as well. You can use our "standard" performance tuning for these F-150's with modifications like a cat-back exhaust system, an intake kit, underdrive pulleys, electric fans & larger throttle bodies, and your engine will be fine.

If you do mods like a supercharger, ported heads, change the MAF (mass airflow meter) or fuel injector size, etc., the more involved stuff, *then* you'll need custom tuning in these late-model F-150's, just to give you a rough idea of when you do and when you don't need custom tuning to compensate for modifications.

Good luck!
