MicroTuner question
Well, while I still have a half a tank of 87 octane, I was reading the instructions for my new Microtuner and here is the question.
I can only raise the speed limiter by going through the "customize Program" correct??? or will it be raised automatically if I load the standard program?
Seems kinda silly to have to go through that whole process just to do away with the limiter since I want to load the standard program.
Meantime, I have scanned for DTC codes and came up empty
Thinking about hitting the highway to burn up some gas

Hi R,
No no no, the top speed limiter will be removed if you just take all the defaults, letting the Micro Tuner upload the standard performance program without going into anything else.
Removing the TS limiter is a standard part of our normal tuning. I refer to it as being "removed," in some codes that instruction is actually removed, while in others the TS limiter is still there, it's just raised so high you can never hit it, like 180 mph for example, whatever is requried to effectively eliminate the TS limiter in each code in these trucks.
One point to remember about this is on the newer trucks (especially 2000 & up) you will usually find that it will take 2-3 separate attempts to exceed the 98 mph top speed limiter, as the newer PCM's take longer to pick up certain changes. This usually means on different drive cycles, so don't be alarmed if the first coupla-few times you're still stuck at 98 mph. Just bring the truck to a stop somewhere safely so you can shut the truck off for a a couple minutes, then start it back up and go after it again. After a few times (usually 2-3 times) it will punch right thru & you can then go as fast as the vehicle has power to go.
Last, it's important to remember that unless you have a supercahrger or 4.10 gearing installed, etc., you'll hit your hightest top speed 1 gear down from Overdrive. So that's 4th gear in the manuals & 3rd gear in the automatics (just turn the Overdrive button off). They don't have enough power to hit top speed in Overdrive without some pretty serious modifications, the motor won't pull enough rpms with gearing that tall. So make sure to stay 1 gear down from Overdrive on your top-end runs, & be careful!!
Have fun,

Thanks Mike,
The book reads a little confusing on that topic.
It lists the raising of speed limiter along with shift points as part of the custom tuning options.
I dont have the book at work right now to quote it exactly, but it led me to believe you had to go through the motions to raise it. I'm glad thats not the case.
It's also strange that nowhere in the booklet does it mention the requirement of Premium gas, only on the back of the box is it mentioned..
Thanks again, I can't wait to get this loaded.
BTW I probably wont go that fast very often, but I wanted the option in case I need to whoop up on somebody

Hi familyman,
The top speed limiter can vary a little bit from one vehicle to the next, we've seen them as low as 95 mph and as high as 108 mph in all the various 1997 & up F-150's & Expeditions. The speedometer in these trucks is in many cases just a little bit optimistic, just slightly, so what looks like might be slightly over 100 mph may actually be 98 mph. The single most common number found for the TS limiter is 98 mph, but it can be slightly above or below that number, so what you're seeing is not extraordinary, so no, I wouldn't say it's a fluke.
You will see your absolute highest speed 1 gear down from Overdrive usually, as these vehicles don't have the power to pull enough rpms in Overdrive. In the automatics, you'll generally hit your highest speed in 3rd gear, and in the 5-speed manuals, in 4th gear. That is, unless you install 4.10 gears or do other significant mods to get engine power up significantly.
