MR. TROYER, a TB Question.

HI Mike!

Just wanted to know if an aftermarket throttlebody would increase throttle responsivness. I was inquiring about a Edelbrock or BBK unit. Do you think it would be a worthwhile mod. if I am not port/polish?

Do you guys carry them?

Thanks,

mf150

PS-- I know this is a Computerchip forum, just wanted Mike's opinion. Sorry.

Hi mf150,

Sure, of course we carry those throttle bodies!

That's the Edelbrock/BBK 75mm unit, and yes, it's a worthwhile mod. It's not very expensive, less than a Superchip, and you don't need any changes made to your tuning when you install it, either.

Installing that 75 mm throttle body on a bone-stock 220 hp 4.6 F-150 is worth about 5 HP, and helps even more as you do other modifications of course. On the 5.4 in bone-stock trim you'll see somewhere around a 7-8 HP gain (again, more as you do more mods) as the 5.4 is not only bigger, but it's increased displacement is all in the stroke, which emphasizes airflow needs & results a little bit.

So overall, yes, it's a good mod and we do carry them, just give us a shout!

Hey Mike--

Just one more question and I will give you a break!

Do you carry JBA titanium/ceramic Headers? If so, Will I have to re-burn my chip for that modification?

Thanks.

I decided that I would save up my spending cash for some headers instead of a TB. More HP potential!

Cool

HI!... MF150 : To bad you don't have a 5.4 in your truck. I have a set of fully ported, TIG welded JBA shorty headers that have been JET BLACK coated twice.

Question

This is a little off topic but I'm going to stick my neck out and ask a possibly dumb question here.

If the 5.4 & 4.6 have the same heads then why are headers not interchangeable? What's different about them ?

Thanks in advance.

Cool

HI!... LE PEW : I've never tried it but people have told me that the flange angles are slightly different because of the taller deck height of the 5.4 compared to the 4.6. If your going with a custom exhaust from the headers back like I did with my JDM/KOOKS long tube headers then it wouldn't matter but you stock existing exhaust system supposedly won't bolt up properly because the the different angles.

Hi mf150,

Yes, we do carry all of teh JBA products, of course Just give us a call.

On those JBA headers, Neal is correct, there are different headers in the JBA's for a 4.6 versus a 5.4 motor. For the 4.6 motors, you use the 1677S headers, and for the 5.4 you would use 1679S headers.

In our custom Kooks longtube headers as we provided Neal with, they can be used with either the 4.6 or the 5.4 motors, however, only in the 2WD trucks, they won't fit on the 4x4's.

For those with 4x4's that want to go to the expense of longtube headers, we also have another solution for the 4x4 trucks available now, so if anyone needs that they can give us a call.

Mike--

Will my chip have to be re-burned if I add headers? Which headers are better... titanium/ceramic coated or SS ceramic?

Hi mf150,

Well, that all depends on all your other modifications and where the A/F ratio lands as a result. Since it's impossible for me to remember who has exactly what modifications done, I can't really give you a definitive set answer.

Usually the way this works is with shorty-style headers you're generally OK, as we're already allowing for intake & exhaust mods, meaning an intake kit & a cat-back exhaust system. You'll make your highest power at somewhere around 12.8-13.0:1 A/F in these modular motors, so as long as you're not towing heavy loads, sure, chances are pretty good you'll be fine. Even towing would *probably* be OK, but I wouldn't want to make a blanket statement like that & have others reading this post start making assumptions that may or may not be accurate for *their* configuration, etc.

With long-tube headers, we usually need to add a bit more fuel.

So with the JBA shortys, you should be fine with your current program, but we can go over all your other mods with you to make sure of that when you call.

I forwarded my question to your email, so that I do not clutter up the board and take up too much of your time!

Thanks!
