An Exhaust Question
An Exhaust Question
Hey Mike.... I bought a Magnaflow catback system (#15609) from you a couple months ago. I really like the system, except for one thing. I've grown to dislike the big 4" exhaust tip. Here's my question. If I buy two 3" Magnaflow stainless tips and have my local muffler shop (who just happens to be a Magnaflow certified shop) build me a new tip for my catback, what will I do to my 'lifetime' warrantee in the process? I think I'd far prefer the look of the smaller twin tip exhaust. Let me know what you think (or would recommend). Thanks.
Hey, while were off topic, I have a Magnaflow question too. Can I get a SI/SO muffler? Will it perform the same as a SI/DO? I have to do some work on the truck and I want to replace the exhaust. If you have this muffler Mike, I'll be calling in an order.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Hi Big D,
Well, in all honesty I wouldn't recommend doing that. First, that 4" tip is not some giant thing, it's beautifully graduated, understated and very tastefully done. I'd *never* change that.
But more importantly, to run dual tips you need to have dual *pipes* coming into them, so you're going to have to change a lot more than just the tip.
The simplest way would be to use a Y-pipe with a 3" inlet and two 2.5" or 3" outlets (and it needs to be 16 ga. T304 Stainless Steel), and then weld the new dual tips to the Y-pipe. I doubt your local muffler shop is going to be able to mandrel bend 2.5" or 3" stainless steel in-house, but maybe they can, you need to check. Most muffler shops can bend aluminum OK up to about 3-4 inches but cannot bend stainless in diameters over about 2" so you'll need to check that out. I would not weld aluminum tubing to stainless tubing, and Magnaflow definitely will not support doing that, either.
The bottom line is this is something you need to give some careful thought to, and then maybe talk directly to Magnaflow to get their input, but be fully prepared for them to tell you any modifications to the system void the warranty. I can't give you an "official" answer, only the manufacturer can do that.
This is not something I would do, but then it's not my vehicle either. The only person that needs to be happy with this is *you*, what I think doesn't matter.
Best of luck whatever you decide,

Hi Tom (witton),
Yes, we carry the entire Magnalfow line, so yes, we do have several different SIDO muffler setups available.
We also have a setup for the F-150 where we can supply the SIDO muffler and the tailpipes for both the left & right side to exit the dual outlets from the muffler to complete the exhaust. Those tailpipes would be in aluminum instead of stainless, and the muffler we can supply in either aluminum or stainless.
Give us a call for details when you get a chance, if you like, & I can go over that with you in proper detail.
Nice to see you again!

Mike T., believe me, you didn't tell me anything that I didn't already think would apply regarding this 'mod'. Since I opened this thread I've spoken with Magnaflow about the issue and got the, "You want to do what to the system you have!!". The Magnaflow rep also made it very clear that "if you alter the system you void your warranty, end of story".
Sooooooo, the 4" tip will stay and I'll turn my attention to other mods (i.e. the Superchips Micro Tuner for my upcoming birthday!!). Will be calling you in the next couple weeks with an order for that item.
By the way, when is your new website going to be finished?
Take care and thanks (as always) for your feedback.

Hi Big D,
I did have one other thought here that should have occurred to me before.................. no doubt there *are* "conversion" dual tips out there, for lack of a better term. Meaning, it would have a singel inlet but a dual outlet, in a finished tip. And doing *that* would be by far the neatest way to do that, and if it was in 304 stainless, then I wouldn't have any qualms about it from a quality & durabiilty standpoint. The warranty issue is still a point, and I think realistically that if you had a problem with the muffler, I'd guess that might be covered since that wasn't changed, though again, I can't speak for them.
The online store was scheduled to open on March 1st, obviously we didn't hit that date (our developer is working slower than we'd like, but we're in it to the finish now), and we're working hard, fast & furious to get it all done ASAP. We're hoping to see it open sometime in the next week or two, is about as close as I can get right now, and we'll annouce in here so everyone will know.
Trust me, we're even more anxious than anyione else to get that site up & running, it's taken forever due to the database application primarily. We have both a parts section search for shopping, as well as the ability to input any make & model & engine size to have any applicable parts automatically pop up, and *that* is a real bear. The SQL database app. is a real pain to categorize everything to make that work properly, which is why that doesn't always work correctly on many web sites with such applications in the performance business.
And so it goes.............
Happy Birthday & talk to you soon!
