Shifting/Chip Question For Mike
Shifting/Chip Question For Mike
Hey Mike,
I'm put your name in the subject because I think I read a post where you addressed thisissue before, but I can't find it.
I've had the SuperChip for about a year(I think). Lately it seems as though my tranny is 'shifting' premature from 2-3, but it doesn't really feel like a shift. It only happens if I am accelerating slowly. If I'm at WOT, there are no problems.
It shifts from 1-2 fine, but then shortly after, it feels like it shifts again, but I don't think it is really shifting, because shortly after that, it feels like it really shifts into 3rd. I think this started happening when I had my 4.10s installed(yes, I had the chip reprogrammed). It seems to be more pronounced when it is cold outside until the engint/tranny gets warmed up.
I'm pretty sure you addressed a post similar to this one a while ago, and if I'm correct, I recall you saying something about the Torque Conerter releasing or something??? Please, any opinion/insight is greatly appreciated.

Hi XLT,
Well, it sounds like what you are talking about is simply the torque converter locking up. This will feel pretty much like another upshift, but the rpms will drop less when the TQ locks up as compared to an actual gearchange, about 400-500 rpm instead of 800-100 rpm in an actual gearchange.
With the Superchip, when you are at full-throttle, the TQ cannot lockup in 1st or 2nd gear, it can't do that until some time after you are in 3rd gear. Again, this is during WOT (wide-open throttle) aceleration we're talking about. On part-throttle, the TQ will lock up anytime it can based on load, vehicle speed & throttle position, whenever it's appropriate, even on part-throttle in the lower gears.
When it's cold outside, the transmission may not upshift into Overdrive (4th gear) right away, the tranny fluid has to hit a certain temp before the PCM will allow 4th gear in the automatics. That happens pretty quickly, it's usually only the first time you accelerate that you'll notice it won't go into 4th gear right away if the temps are cold. Just normal behavior.
Sounds to me like what you are describing is pretty much normal. One thing to remember, of course, is not to give it much throttle until it warms up, this is true for both the engine and especially the automatic transmissions. Until the powertrain is warmed up, just drive it easy. You can drive it at normal highway speeds if need be, just accelerate slowly until it's warmed up, to take it easy on the tranny. In other words, let the tranny fluid get some heat in it before driving it "enthusiastically," shall we say.
