Question For Mike T.

Hey Mike. You are a great asset to this forum and we all appreciate what you do. That being said, I have a question for you: I have a 98 4.2L f150 with a lift and 285/75/16 tires. A while back I got a speedo shop to change the gear in my transmission that affects the speedo and maybe the odometer. The guy there said the closest he could get it to was within about 1mph. That's fine but I want to get a chip or programmer and noticed you can change the computer to accomidate bigger tires with the programmer. I want to be accurate, so if I get the programmer, do I have to change the gear back to the way it was? Also, will the chip have any problems with the different speedo gear? I think the 98's were the last year ford used a mechanical speedo thing in the transmission. Also, what do you think is better, the programmer or the chip? Any advice you or anyone else could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi MFT98,

Thanks for your kind words, they're greatly appreciated!

Since you have the 4.2 L V6 engine, you'll need to use the traditional Superchip module, as the Micro Tuner is for the V8 F-150's only. Makes your choice much simpler, eh?

The Micro Tuner can only correct the speedometer in the 1999 & newer V8 F-150's, by the way, as prior to the '99 model year it's not done via the powertrain program, but instead by what you have already done, changing the speedometer gear in the tailshaft of the transmission. Once you have corrected your speedo with the speedo gear, that would be fine with either the traditional Superchip module or the newer Micro Tuner (if it was a V8), we don't have any problems there or need to do anything different in the tuning.

Give us a call to go over this in more detail, etc., our contact info is just below!
