Questions For Mike the superchips guy
Questions For Mike the superchips guy
Number one.......... will Superchips or Hypertech ever make a power programer for the 4.2? the one that does is gonna make a whole lotta money, and they will get some from me.
number two, on a previous post you stated this......
"For example, we know what virtually every commercial "name brand" intake kit for the F-150 makes on each engine offered (4.2, 4.6 & 5.4), and we know what virtually ever "name brand" cat-back exhaust system makes, because we spent 23 exhausting months doing dyno, street & track testing just on commercial intake & exhausts alone. And so on, with each area of modification..................... "
so i ask, how much HP (at the flywheel) does a 4.2 make with a superchip alone?
how about an AirRaid intake alone?
how about gibson supertruck exhaust alone?
how about all three put together?
just wondering what to expect in numbers.
thanks

Hi Wedgewood,
We can't answer as to what Hypertech might do as we don't carry their line because their tuning ability in these vehicles is poor. Thus we don't carry their line & can't speak to any potential future availability.
Superchips probably will, in time, do a Micro Tuner for the 4.2 V-6 F-150, but it will be months before that happens. It's not an application with significant demand, thus recouping R&D coasts will take far longer, so it's a matter of fiscal priority, even though here at Performance we *love* to see V6 owners modifying their vehicles, and much can be done.
However, we've been providing performance tuning for the 4.2 V-6 for as long as that engine has existed in the Superchip, which is always readily available. That's the way to go for the foreseeable future. The maximum potential gain from the Superchips tuning in the 4.2 V6 is 25 HP & 31 lbs./ft. of torque.
With regard to numerous questions, details, power gains on numerous different parts, rear wheel gains on this and that configuration, etc., etc., it's just too much to type it all out with the hundreds of emails & posts we get everyday, each of which has numerous questions too, so it's just not physically possible, & thanks for your understanding on that. Give us a call & we'll be mroe than happy to go over all of that with you.
Briefly, Gibson & airaid would not be our picks for those areas of modifications, there are much better parts available that won't cause significant low end torque and that are made of much higher quality materials, will last longer and will deliver much better results in both torque and horsepower. Just give us a call & we can go over that with you.
Merry Christmas!

no problem bikenut.....
the reason i got a v6 is more of a story. i inherited an early 97 F150 with the 4.2 and drove the heck out of it. very strong reliable engine.
i then went to get a new truck so that my truck could be passed down in the family. i went looking and didnt really care what engine i got. i found an extended cab deep wedgewood blue 4x2 with a 4.2 XLT with matching interior, flawless body, paint, undercarriage, interior etc. was offered a deal. i took it.
why by a v6 and enhance its performance? what else would i get, a v8?
let me ask you something, why get a v8 and enhance its performance when you could get a v10?
same question. no offence taken, but since my car payment is 160 a month and my first v6 was free, i dont have room to complain.
as for mike................
i understand about the numbers. in the future if you got a database of what would happen to ________ engine with ____ mod that would kick ***.
the main reason i wanted to go with the programer was because i think with hypertech you can still run on 87 octane (either theirs or someone elses) can you program me one to run on 87?
i gotta get my gears and tires first and the coil spacers are in the basement so the chip would be last but i like lookin early.
for bikenut and mike........
i already got an AirRaid and it gave great throttle response. when i say performance i dont mean drag strip *** kicking i mean nice acceleration and firm shifts. if your sellin 31 (give or take) torque for 300 bucks plus better shifts then i dont care if i got a 2 stroke leaf blower, ill hook it up lol
Thanks for your help. Merry Christmas to you too.

Gotcha!
Man, believe me, I love a good deal! The only reason I have the 5.4 is because it happened to be in the truck that was the good deal
Im not knocking the 6 at all by the way, we use them at work and beat the crap out of those trucks. I was surprised when I first saw that they were sixes.
On the v-10 note, I rented a RV last year that had the 450 chassis (GREAT Chassis btw) and it had the V-10. The V-10 was of course a strong motor, but I would have thought it would be alot more powerful. I think a big 8 would run with that 10.
Has anyone ever seen a V-10 at the strip?
BTW, The Superchips Tuner is the best mod. I've done. I hope Mike can hook you up!
