Question Cracking rain gutters(yes, I used SEARCH)

OK, so my 98 Scab (Pacific Green) has gutter cracks. It is out of warranty (naturally). What is the best course of action to fix the problem? Any chance of Ford being willing to fix it at this late date? Stop laughing...it isn't nice.

I'm not really that concerned about appearance. I'm 5'10" and I can only see the roof of my truck when I'm standing on the bed. And unlike many of you, I'm of the opinion that its a truck. It hauls things. It is gonna get dents. And dings. And scratches. I just don't want it to rust.

My first idea was clear silicone caulk, like you'd use on a tub or shower enclosure. Once I did a search, I saw that someone mentioned going to a body shop and getting some silicone body sealant (probably a better idea).

What has everyone else done, that hasn't had Ford just repaint it?

Thanks,
Mike

i have tried silicone on my old chev. yes i said it. but its long gone. hehe any ways. i had a water leak from there. silicone would not work. but i used a clear seam sealer (kent). its like silicone thats watered down. you use just a little and it takes a long time to set up. so it flows down inside. and when it drys it is flat and smooth. not like silicone if you touch it, thats the way it stays from now on. your finger print. hehe. good luck on your repair.

I personally wouldn't do anything other than making sure I wax that area really well.

I don't know about the '98, but isn't there some kind of soft sealer under the paint in the channel anyway?

I got my truck 3 weeks ago and already have cracks. Will they fix this under warranty? I'm not so sure I want a dealer on my paint anyway really.

Mine also has the gutter cracks, not bad, but they are there. My truck is also Pacific Green. But since I'm only 5'7" I need a step stool to see my roof.

my truck has had them since day one. they have only gotten worse (but haven't extended out of the channels). this is a pretty common problem and if you take your finger nail and push down, you can feel there is some type of sealant stuff under the paint and its soft which =cracks. I'm not too worried about it, but since my truck is a show truck and lowered and i'm 6'1" i can see the cracks I took it to the dealership and they said they'd have to paint the entire cab, repinstripe the truck, and rip off my window's vent visors! I told them screw that. There's no reason for them to have to paint the ENTIRE cab. There's no reason for them to paint the entire roof! all they would have to do is tape everything offf and only paint the channels. I'll probably take it back in the spring and ask again
