swirl prevention

Been reading thru the archived posts, and I've only found posts about swirl removal - time to take a different approach.

Wanted to get a thread going with some good information for newer truck owners to help prevent damage to their clearcoat.

From what I've found thus far:

1) AVOID auto car washes
2) If going to use a buffer, make sure it is an orbital buffer.
3) If you can't use a micro-fiber towel to apply products, opt for an american made 100% cotton bath towel.
4) apply your chosen coating product in a veritcal, top to bottom motion on the side panels, and a front-to-back motion on the horizontal panels

what other good tips do you have?

Question

So you're saying:
1) chuck the "sponge" that comes w/ most paste waxes?
2) forget the "circular motion" most waxes recommend?

I can't speak much from personal experience here - I was combining things I've read from archived posts throughout the site. I was hoping to get some input from people if those things were in fact correct, and add in any other good tips people had.
