Unhappy Leather wrapped steering wheel

I have a gray leather steering wheel on my F150 Lariet. There are places on the circular part of the wheel, especially at the top, that are starting to turn black. I try to get it off, but it appears that the gray color is gone. Is there anything I can do to keep it from spreading to other parts of the steering wheel. And also, is there anything I can do to get the orginal color back where it has turned black?

I have thought of getting the carbon fiber dash inserts and steering wheel cover, but am unsure of what the finished product would look like. Does anyone have any pics of the carbon fiber inserts on a truck with the gray leather interior?

The color is disappearing from the leather?! Argh. What are you using to clean it?

The leather on the steering wheels is mega-super-ultra treated-clearcoated leather (to the point it's almost plastic) and should stand up to just about anything.

Not sure about what to do to bring the color back (short of replacing the wheel) but, I do highly recommend using a LEATHER CLEANER (Lexol pH Balanced Leather Cleaner is great stuff -- Orange bottle) for your steering wheel. Multi-purpose cleaners (409, Windex, AmorAll Multi-Purpose Cleaner, etc) contains agents designed to REMOVE oils and such whereas leather need the natural oil found in cowhide to maintain it's supple feel and also to keep it durable. Leather cleaner/conditioner products (good ones) contain those natural oils to help keep the leather in tip-top shape.

Once you've properly cleaned the leather, be sure to apply some conditioner (again, Lexol is great stuff).

Good luck.
