Question for Intel or others

5/9/02

Intel,

A few weeks back I read one of your posts regarding washing with the two or three bucket method.

I was hoping I could get you to elucidate a little more on that...

Are you using the second bucket just to "rinse" the mitt/sponge??

If using the third bucket, what order are you placing it?

I know this might seem a bit detail intensive.. but I'm trying to pick up some pointers on how to clean the black finish and minimize minute damage.

Thanks
Dan

One bucket is for Tires, wheels, and wheel wells. I use a bug sponge, a nylon bristled brush, a brash brush, and a skinny nylon spoke brush.

Bucket two would be for below the trim line where you get the most dirt and tar.

Bucket three would be for all the paint above the trim line.

This is basically a setup for a extreme enthusiast. It is actually kinda overboard if you take the proper steps. Since I do a lot of this for money and time is money, I only use one bucket.

For tires, wheels and wheel wells I use a wheel cleaner in a spray bottle. I spray it on, scrub tires, and then hose off. Don't use soapy water at all.

If there is tar, bugs, tree sap, then I'll get that off now. After that stuff is pretreated or removed, then I'll hit the whole truck with a pressure washer. Will get most of the bird droppings and dirt off. I'll then start washing the car with a microfiber mitt and my bucket of soapy water. After every panel I hit my microfiber mitt with my pressure washer to get everything out of it.

Hi dan:

Since you're looking for suggestions, I use a slight variation of the three bucket method. Bucket one for tires, wheels, and wheel wells (brush for the tires and wheel wells, chenille pad or sponge for wheels). Bucket two for the rest of the truck. Bucket three is fresh water for rinsing the chenille mitt I use to wash the rest of the truck. If bucket two gets really dirty during the wash, I just dump the dirty water, wash out the bucket with a bit of car wash soap (or dawn if I remembered to bring it out with me....because I have it and it's cheaper than car wash soaps), rinse, then refill with water and car wash soap. If my lovely wife has "borrowed" bucket one I still use a rinse bucket, but do the tires, wheel wells, and wheels first with the "wash" bucket, then dump that, give it a quick wash with dawn, then refill it with water and car wash soap and start on the rest of the truck. FWIW.

ernie

PS I too have a black truck
