Wheel bearing sysmptoms or brakes??

HI Everyone

I had the brakes replaced in Jan 2002 and now (lately) when I hit the brakes I get a grinding crunchy feeling and sound from the left front especially when going down hill.

Inspection shows plenty of brake lining left and I'm starting to think they beat the crap out of the bearing in order to get the disk off for surfacing.

Can anyone describe what a bad bearing sounds like on a 4X4?

Can anyone comment? I tried the search but nothing was there.

Need help---Bob

If it only makes that noise when you apply the brakes it's probably not the bearing. When a bearing goes bad it generally makes noise all the time.

I would agree with Indyfan. I am an electrical test engineer and have worked with electic motors for about 19 years so I have experence with bearings on motors. If you wanted to insure its not the bearings you could take the tire off remove the brake pads and then spin the wheel you should not hear any type of grinding noise. If you do then you very well may have bad bearings. By removing the brake pads you will insure that nothing will be rubbing against the rotors. While the pads are off you can then inspect the inside of the pads and see if they look unusal. I am no expert on pads but maybe the pads have bad material or are defective in some way. Its a thought.
