shell/cap questions from Newbie

I just bought a 92 Custom-4.9, 5-speed with 30,000 original miles! It is an awesome truck and exactly what I was looking for...except for the fact that it has a Leer Cap/Shell and runningboards.

Well, the running boards are bolted on, so they will be off this weekend, but my question if re: the cap:

I want to take it off (unhappy with visibility, don't need it), what is the best way to remove the foam tape that is on the bed rail?

I would assume that it would take some type of goo-remover, but what won't harm the paint?

thanks,
Matt

Question

anybody?

I know that there are folks out there who take these off for the summer and put them on in the winter...

Matt-

Peel off the tape by hand if it will, scrape the remaining with your fingernail or a plastic putty knife, clean the goop off with a rag and WD-40, and wash and wax the area.

I also used a plastic putty knife on a old truck of mine, but then I used some of the Orange/Citrus adhesive remover to get the residue off...it worked great.

Even if your rales are scratched you can get rail caps/covers in jc whitney for 80-125 bucks...(plastic or diamond tread)

once you pull off the actual foam, use a product called "Goof-off". This is an adhesive remover that will get rid of the tacky stuff left behind.

Do you know if it indeed foam underneath? I know some places use thin, wide rubber that comes on a roll.

UPDATE - Need more help...

Okay, got the running boards off today and went to take the cap off - took all six aluminum clamps off, and...

the thing won't budge, and believe me-with what I did it should have.

I cannot see any more mechanical fasteners - it just seems like it is on with doble-sided tape.

Any ideas of what to do now...

thanks for the replies, I like it here already.

the proper way might include using a heat gun, starting at the back and moving forward to soften up the tape.

or....

get in the back of the truck, squat and push up like an Olympic power weightlifter and push straight up with all off your might,

and if that doesnt work.....

the biggest crowbar you can find!

Get a buddy or two to help.

one of you trying to lift a side while the other uses a stiff PLASTIC paint scraper to pry it apart...this will be tedious, but you want to be careful and not crack the shell other wise you'll never be able to sell it...GOOD LUCK!!
