What Oil to use
Hi,
I took advantage of Ford's low interest rates and traded in my 2000 F150 SuperCab XLT for a 2001 F150 SuperCrew Lariat. I would like to change the oil and I was wondering what brand and grade do you guys recommend.
I used to buy an additive called TufOil that promised engine longivity, but don't know if thats true. I'm tempted to just buy Mobil 1 synthetic oil, its expensive but I haven't heard anything wrong with it.

e, I would avoid the additives, most of them are snake oil and some are very detrimental. Your choice of Mobil 1 is a solid one. Oil is the life blood of your engine, so I would't fret over what really amounts to a pittance, when you consider what you spent on your rig.
I don't know if anyone else noticed this or had the same results as I, but when I did the first oil change on my new '01 F150 (4.6) I followed the Ford spec and used 5w-20 (AMSOIL). The first thing I noticed was that the 5w-20 was like pouring water...incredible thin. After the change I noticed a valve ping/engine noise where there was none before (at least I didn't notice it). The truck only had 800 miles on it at the time of the change but I wanted to get the synthetic in there and thinking I was doing the right thing by using the weight that Ford calls for.
I will not be using 5w-20 any longer but instead will switch to Mobil 1 5w-30 during the winter and maybe 10w-30 during the summer months.
Would like to hear opinions on the 5w-20 and also on using the 5w-30 or 10w-30 M1 in place of it. Warranty issues? Engine tolerances, any technical reasons not to?

Castrol Syn 5W-50
I use Castrol Syntech 5W-50 b/c I can buy it at Walmart. They Amsoil brochure at a parts house I use shows that the Castrol gets close to the Amsoil on some test. Who knows...
I figure the 5 describes how thin it is, but the 50 describes how protective it is.
I use the 5W-50 in my boat too - it has a 351.
My experience is that motor oil discussions can be as touchy as religion discussions. Sort of a personal choice, I guess.
