Paint and clearcoat
Paint and clearcoat
I recently got a fairly sizable scratch on my right rear panel behind the rear wheel well fairly low on the truck. I touched it up enough to hide the scratch, but is there any way to give it it's shine back? Since there is no clearcoat on it, it is noticable when you get up close to it. So far, I am the only one who knows it's there, but I do know, that's the problem. I tried a couple of the clearcoat safe shine restorers with no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Give serious consideration to a professional.
At least consult one. One that you trust and can at least give you an opinion.
I'm sharing my bad experience with auto body repair. If you have done it before with success, great, but it is definitely something which looks easier than it really is.
To compare, remember how much we all eat at Thanksgiving? The food is great and we all pack it in. Then an hour later we are all sitting around in pain because are stomach wants to explode?
It's that kind of thing. Looks easy, but it's more art than science.
Please save yourself my pain. Ask someone who can look at it, feel it and then give you a responsible opinion. The guys here on this board are wonderful and extremely knowledgable. But this kind of a problem needs both eyes and fingers to assess correctly.
To finish my story, by little touch up job, which I clearly thought I could fix with $10 worth of material, cost $600 to repair. Sometimes we make things a lot worse first!
Take a look at the final pictures. I too had a nasty scratch above the rear tire about 5 inches in length on the driver's side.

Through the good graces of PPG and other paint suppliers to the vehicle manufacturers, there are many photos and text explainations of clear coat issues, what causes them, what the repair may be, etc. as well as a full set of photos with text that goes through the entire paint process from the cleaning of the body, applying the e-coat, etc, etc.
