Squeaky Tailgate

I've put up with this noise for about as long as I care to. Basically, the locking mechanism where the tailgate latches onto the bed of the truck ( one on each side ). I've tried WD-40 and it will work for a day, but it goes right back to squeaking again. Only the left side show signs of rust, but both will squeak if prompted. Is there anyway to adjust the tailgate? Or should I buy stock in some lubricant company?

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.

Try white lithium grease, works great on all those annoying little squeaks.
Good luck.

whitestx and InfiniteMhz,

Thanks to both for the suggestions. I'll attack it as soon as I can get my hands on some of that grease. I'll post my findings.

Anyone else tried anything different? Just curious to see what home remedies people use for such an annoying problem.

Thanks again,

I am somewhat ashamed to say... I used black electrical tape! It seemed to do the trick and up until the time I sold the truck I never heard the squeak again.

I use the white grease too - and have to apply it about every 6-8 mos.

the 10 second fix!

Have you ensured that the plastic cup is on the lower left hinge? And the plastic plug is on the right?
