juice504j- I'm with you on that thought but the manufacturers do not have to issue a "public" recall if it is not life-threatening issue. These folks have gotten away with butchered experiments on their paint process' for a long time. Sometimes I feel like these issues are attributed to planned failure. Anyhow, a few folks that I know have gotten lucky by complaining to the dealership but most just got the run-around. This included a lot of folks that paid for paint protection programs and found out later that the contract had enough loop-holes in it to "void it" if a re-paint issue reared its ugly head. The key seems to be removing whatever that gold to tan residue is, if your paint is new or still in good shape.

Once I moved to Virginia and my truck was not under a carport, it started doing the same thing. It was definately the Ford paint they used that caused these problems.

It's not just F-150s. My dark gray 2005 Crown Vic patrol car has the same issue. I noticed it a couple years ago but so far it has not started to flake off. Funny thing is our department has two 2004 silver Crown Vics. Suddenly last year a spot flaked off the roof of one of them. It's constantly getting larger as the paint flakes away. At least mine isn't doing that!

I'm currently in Bahrain and have stumbled across a friend of ours whose Jeep Cherokee Limited 4x4 has the same problem, a fractured paint job. Second, they attempted to wax the surface in one area and now there is a white residue that no one has been able to remove. Next they tried to compound and it to has left nothing but a white residue in the surface. The good part is the clear is still in tact but the compound and wax residue have been baking in the Bahrain sun since first week of August 2011. I have asked him if I could shoot a video as nothing more than an example of the fractured paint as a point of reference, but while I'm doing this, I will also try to remove the compound & waxes while bringing his dead paint back. I will try to add a link over the next 2 to 3 weeks, depending on how many more of these sand storms stay in the area.

My 03 has the same thing on the hood..Only about a dozen spots and it hasnt got any worse in the 4 years ive owned it. If it starts chipping or anything its going straight to the the body shop to get repainted..

Looks like crows feet to me

Clearcoat failing

Let us know what Ford says about it but for now do not try and polish that would make it worse if anything put a glaze on it then a wax or sealant but they will surly not go away

Angry

I realize this thread is one year old, but this is an important issue. I too have the same problem on my 1999 F-150. I brought this up with a local Ford dealer and of course, they won't assume responsibility. Looks like the complaints start with the 2000 models. I guess i'm s**t out o' luck. Looks like I have to pay 100% out of pocket for a new paint job.

One year old thread..........NO, Ford won't take care of you. Their warranty says 30 days or 6 months, something like that. That is what it means. Take a shower, have it color sanded and clear coated, end of story. I can see if were a big mechanical failure or an on going, known problem, but it isn't. It is, after all, a truck..........Not a Lambo or a Ferrari.

The color sanding, etc will not resolve the issue...it is in the primer...in almost 100% of the cases, the paint must be taken down to bare metal and start again otherwise it will just be a repeat process in anywhere from 6 months to a few years. There is lots of documentation going back before 1990 and continuing through the late 2000's .....most of which was a result of Ford contracting out the paint application operations.....not enough thickness, drying time to the primers....and while i know a few of the "experts" on here give an eyebrow or two to what i have posted, in 1997, Ford repainted my entire truck (1990 F150) that I had owned since new.

8 years is too soon for a paint job to break down, especially for a well cared for truck.

Registered so I could add a thank you (for what it's worth) on this cracking problem. I have a 2001 Twilight Blue, Ford Focus. These little cracks have been driving me nuts for a couple years....never could get an answer (until now) as to what caused this. Car was bought new in October of 2000.....started showing up, first on the hood and now spreading.

Sooo...new paint job for an otherwise perfect little car. Ford, you came so close.
